In our series on understanding International Organizations, today we will be discussing ITU.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a UN specialized agency responsible for ICT matters.
Established in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union,
it connects telegraphic networks between countries.
ITU's mandate broadened with new communication technologies,
and it now promotes shared global use of radio spectrum,
satellite orbits,
develops standards, and improves telecommunication infrastructure in the developing world.
Based in Geneva, the ITU has 193 member countries, 900 businesses and organizations,
and works on broadband internet, wireless technologies, navigation,
radio astronomy, broadcasting, and next-gen networks.
