The western end of al-Andalus, later to become southern and central Portugal, has a very interesting history of its own under Islamic rule. It was called "Gharb al-Andalus" (the west of al-Andalus) and it was always a very unstable area prone to revolt both by Christian subjects and Muslim aristocrats and troops stationed there.
