They were all recreated by an AI model that was fed the brain scans of people looking at these pictures.

Two AI researchers at Japan’s Osaka University, Shinji Nishimoto and Yu Takagi, have built what some might call mind-reading AI.

A number of research groups have generated images from brain signals before, however, their systems involved millions of parameters while this one involves only thousands.

Shinji & Yu’s system leverages a latent diffusion model to reconstruct images from human brain activity obtained via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Now, if you’re worried about having your mind read without consent, the models have to be customized to the brain of each individual, which would require brain-scanning sessions and huge fMRI machines. So everyday mind reading isn’t here just yet.

However, more practical future applications could allow for interesting activities like creating and altering art and games with your imagination.
