Scientists predict historic cicada invasion

Billions of cicadas will emerge from the ground all across the country, creating a once-in-a-lifetime event come May or when the ground reaches 64 degrees.

WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman spoke with two experts about what we can expect to see here in the Triad.

Two large broods of cicadas in the Midwest and in the Southeast are set to make their way out of the ground this summer. This is quite a rare experience, as the last time this happened was over 200 years ago.

In Indianapolis, Indiana in the summer of 1996 or 1997 I don't remember which, the cicadas were so loud you had to keep the door and winders closed, and car windows closed there were so many they were so loud. Even on the freeway, you couldn't talk to someone in the same car.
