Adopting a gender-sensitive approach to interviewing and the treatment of women within the criminal justice system is crucial. Reem Alsalem, UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women said the Méndez Principles “serve as a very important reminder, checklist, basis for work, and that's something I think everyone – not just States – would welcome”.
