Amazing moment when a massive lightning bolt strikes the 125-foot Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil once more!
Over the weekend, a bolt of lightning struck Brazil's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, shocking users of social media after it was captured on camera.
Interestingly, this is the third time in 15 years that the 125-foot statue in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro has been struck by such a strike. Nearly two million people visit the statue every year.
The religious figure's head was struck by a bolt on February 10, triggering a flash that millions of people around the world are now able to see, despite the fact that such events are still extremely uncommon.
Fernando Braga, a photographer, was one of the few who was able to capture both still images and video footage of the lightning strike as it occurred.
The mind-boggling media, which has been distributed online and viewed more than 20 million times, has captivated many.
Massimo, a Twitter user, posted the first images of lighting striking the world's largest Jesus statue, giving credit to Braga for the image.
Braga, a self-described "hobbyist" whose social media also features a number of pictures of the statue in more normal circumstances, also took a number of other pictures and the aforementioned video, which fully documented the dramatic scene.
Many people wondered if the occurrence was the work of a divine or otherworldly power as the media spread online. Others praised Braga for capturing a temporal, visceral moment like this.
One user noted that, shockingly, the statue, which was selected as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, had been struck by lightning twice in less than two decades, in 2008 and 2014.
On one of several posts displaying Braga's snaps, the user made a joke, saying, "At this point Zeus or Thor." Despite the jokes, this is a fairly common occurrence because it is the highest point. It's just luck that someone was taking pictures at the right time.
One more person praised the cameraman's ability to take pictures, saying about one of his stills, " Stunning shot! I appreciate your sharing.
A third person made a joke, saying, Mom! Jesus and Thor are back at it!' while a different user merely said, "Wow! Oh my word, WOW!
Others noted that the video, in particular, left viewers in awe, and that the photos of the lightning appeared to be nothing short of a divine scene.
Images and media showed a storm that destroyed the seaside city of Rio and uprooted trees in several areas. Thankfully, no damage was done to the statue.
However, that was not the case when it was struck for the first time nearly a decade ago, in January 2014, which was also captured on camera. Officials at the time said that the bold hurt the effigy's thumb, so it had to be fixed.
The statue had previously been struck by lightning for the first time six years earlier, but it was unharmed.
However, the statue's location on top of the Corcovado Hill, more than 2,000 feet above Rio, may be to blame for the unusual number of electrically charged incidents. The iconic statue is the largest Jesus statue ever constructed.
One of the most well-known landmarks in the world, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a symbol of hope, love, and perseverance for many people. The Brazil Christ Statue Lightning has sustained significant damage over the years despite its iconic status. The right thumb of the statue was destroyed when it was struck by lightning in 2008. Its head was damaged by another lightning strike in 2014. The statue has been protected and restored to its original condition thanks to the efforts of the Brazilian government and the local communities.
The Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil is still a significant symbol for many people, despite the damage caused by lightning strikes. Millions of tourists travel to Rio de Janeiro each year to see the statue in person because of its worldwide fame. In addition, the statue has been included in a list of the New Seven Wonders of the World, enhancing its status as a famous landmark.
