There's also piles of lined up bodies in body bags from all the failed training sessions from other recruits that you can't really tell are there unless you go looking and there's a few more I can't quite remember about.

Pretty sure the memorial is a reference to the scene you can find on bug missions where a colonist lies slumped against a grave, and a shovel is lodged in a brood commander's head
