Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at what appears to be a settlement over Google's Chrome Incognito mode. Many people have a glaring misconception over incognito mode and if it provides you true anonymity on the Internet. I'm here to explain why it doesn't and what you can do to better keep yourself hidden. Thanks for watching!

Did anyone actually think Incognito was anything beyond not having to manually clear your history? I’ve figured that literally since it was first released.

I always assumed that incognito mode was just about not storing browser cookies and history on your local machine. It was never about providing you actual anonymity or preventing your ISP, or 3rd parties from tracking your activities.

I think that the biggest reason why Google was slammed was because they had advertised it as a truly private browsing experience at first but it never was.

I was always more afraid of my parents learning what I was searching up, I was always fine with Google suffering with the knowledge of what I was looking up.

Anyone who thought Incognito Mode was trace proof needs to take a class about ins and outs of Internet Security.

Honestly, I’d expect Google to do what every company does, drag it out as long as possible with their expensive laywers so that the ones sueing them run out of money to continue.

At this point I don't care how stupid the lawsuits are, it's good to see these companies being held accountable for anything.

While incognito mode is definitely not private, it's still useful for stuff like temporarily logging into alt accounts for sites that don't support multiple logins like steam, or for watching youtube videos and making google searches without messing with your algorithm (which is faster than manually cleaning watch and search history)

I've always understood these "private" or "incognito" modes to ONLY mean limited local storage of browser use data. Websites have to collect certain data in order to work, regardless of the privacy claims of the browser. Even if you ran a browser installed on a thumb drive, the ISP and websites will still collect certain data.

I don't think anyone ever thought that incognito mode makes you anonymous or protects your privacy. All it's for is to look up "content" without worrying about search history, which is what everyone uses it for.

Never used incognito mode on any browser, I want them to see every heinous, disgusting thing I look at.

As a web developer, I use Incognito Mode a lot for checking websites as if someone visit the site the first time.

I always assumed anything you would use to “hide” your actions was clearly being gathered. I mean, if you feel like you need to hide it, they feel they need to record it.

Using incognito mode is like playing your 3ds under a blanket but your mom can still hear it

People should know better. But Google was 100% intentionally misleading with their naming and advertising of the feature to make it seem more private than it was. The plaintiffs are dumb but in the right

I think the whole reason for the confusing name is because they benefit from people thinking it's more private than it really is. That said, the one place where I will call foul is if they create that expectation that using incognito mode should at least provide privacy from other users to the same device, they should keep the ad data separate. Otherwise, what you do in incognito influences the personalized, targeted ads that are served to you. I can imagine that could create embarrassment or awkward situations when ads that shouldn't be appropriate for your normal browser are served to you when family/friends are there to see.

I think it's a case where the name has outgrown the feature. incognito mode etc when they came out were never about internet security, it was more for people with a family PC where you had some reason for others in your family to not risk seeing your history - say, your browsing some saucy things after the kids are in bed, or you're buying a gift for someone in your home and don't want them to know. the security connotations only really came after we all realized what it means for these companies and the government to be able to watch what we're doing online. the service/browser mode and how they're presented haven't changed but the landscape that we're aware we exist in has by a wide margin - which is to say that I'm 30, have used computers all my life, and they have never really changed the description or wording of these explanations for as long as I can remember it being a thing to my memory.

i think these browser mods should be rebranded similar to how you mentioned, local mode or guest mode. something that indicates the level of privacy it actually entails - which is to say, it's only private from your household.
