Greek elections bring confusion
With two elections within a year, the future of Greece seems more and more uncertain.
After their September 20 election win, the Syriza party’s leader, Alexis Tsipras and his government have to carry out unpopular reforms. They’re demanded by international creditors under the terms of a third bailout.
Greece’s Obstacles Lie Ahead
The most controversial issue facing Tsipras is pension cuts. Pensioners are worried and angry as they are facing big cuts in their pensions - sometimes up to 50 percent. People are also being forced to retire at a later age.
Many pensioners believe that Tsipras did not keep the promises he made before he got elected
As well as pension reforms, Greeks will also have to live with tax increases. And the labor market is expected to change as well, which is worrying younger Greeks. According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, 25 billion euros from the third bailout will be used to recapitalise the country’s banks.
Tsipras Sets New Government Priorities
Alexis Tsipras has laid out his new government’s priorities, and said MPs need to respond to them quickly.
“The quick fulfilment of the agreed reforms is our main priority. The first step will be the first appraise in order to start discussing the impairment of the Greek debt” The impairment of the Greek debt is the first priority as Tsipras puts it, but implementing it without hurting Greek people looks like the hardest part.
Tsipras says dealing with Greece’s debt is his biggest task. But tackling it without upsetting the people who voted him into power, could be his hardest.
