I've literally had this in my mouth for 30 years. It's never broken.

POV: your feeling your permanent retainer with your tongue as your watching this 🤣

Flossing is easy with these once you learn the trick! Since they're bonded to the canines, floss between the canine and incisors next to them on BOTH sides. Wiggle the floss down until it is below your retainer, it should be parallel. Using your tongue or fingers, pull on the floss until one side comes out and the other is still between your teeth. That piece of floss is now between your teeth and retainer and you should be able to easily glide it to all of your incisors to floss. Once you're done flossing all of your incisors, you can just pull the floss out from the retainer.

It's a long explanation, but its really easy and quick to do. I'm surprised the Bentist doesn't know about this, or if he does, didn't share it.

As someone who had no choice in getting one, his reaction is on point.

I've had mine for 23 years and it's never broken off. I've lost my regular retainer a lot though lol. Flossing it is a pain I agree.

Haven’t had any issues with mine for the last 5 years or so. Actually super happy I got the permanent one because my lazy ass would forget to wear a regular one all the time. As long as you don’t bite anything too hard (I got into the habit of slicing any hard fruits before eating) they’re not a problem. Flossing — yes, annoying — but I use a water flosser for the area and it cleans just fine.

I didn’t have a choice- they just glued it to my teeth and sent me out lmao

THANK YOU! My orthodontist was disappointed when I asked for a Hawley retainer instead of a bonded retainer, and I was like “dude, I’ve had braces for like a year and a half, I want to floss like a normal freakin person!”

I just got permanent retainers on both the top and bottom teeth, and I’m really happy with them. This was my second round with braces. The first time, I had braces for almost 3 years and got them off in 2017. Unfortunately, my dentist didn’t stress how important retainers were, so I didn’t take them seriously and stopped wearing them. My teeth started shifting, and I ended up with gaps. I got braces again in October 2022, and now, after 1 year and 7 months, I’m finally getting them off next week. This time, I’m super conscious about wearing my retainers. I got the permanent ones, but even if I had the plastic transparent retainers, there's no way I’d neglect wearing them. I’ll probably wear them for the rest of my life because I don’t want to mess up my teeth again! 😂

I have a permanent retainer on my bottom row of teeth, I didn’t really get a choice about it tho. The orthodontist kinda just slapped it on without saying anything to me and I was 16 at the time. Luckily I haven’t really had big problems with them, the most annoying thing is when popcorn kernels get stuck in it

Everyone talking about the retainer:

Me: Where the hell did they get that camera angle from?

I’ve had both top and bottom permanent retainers for almost 14 years now. In that entire time, I’ve had ONE glut dot fall off my top retainer causing the tooth on the furthest right to disconnect from the retainer. They don’t even reattach it, just clipped the wire down and glued over the sharp edge. It’s been about 5 years since then and they’re all still straight. They’re a nuisance when you first get them and can cause a lisp or a raw tongue from rubbing, and like he said, flossing sucks(they have tools to make it easier though!) but other than that I’ve had literally no issues whatsoever. But I was also the kid who broke my retainer at LEAST once every 3 months. Some options just work better for others.

I have one, never had any problem in 9 years and flossing can be a bit annoying at first but you get efficient with it and learn to adapt. Highly recommend.

I had to have braces to fix an overbite. They adjusted the alinement of my bite while they were at it, but even my regular dentist said the alinement wasn't the problem, just the overbite (15 years ago mind you).
When it was time to get my braces removed, they had me fill out a sheet on whether i wanted a permanent retainer or not (the head lady explained what it was). I said no, and they sent me back to get worked on by a woman who im fairly certain hated either me or just her job. (All she ever did was complain and be super aggressive.)
She was messing around with my mouth, and when she was done, i felt something behind my teeth and asked when I'd come back to get it removed. Then she (again rudely) told me that it was permanent and never coming out.
I went to the front, crying a bit over it, and my mom asked what happened. When i told her, she looked like she was about to bring a swift end to this woman. She raised absolute heck, and this lady defended her actions by saying, "i know she said she doesn't want it, but kids like her always lose their retainers anyway. This is better."
My mom made them remove the band, and the whole time, this other woman just sat complaining about how I'd have to come back before i graduated because my teeth were gonna get messed up again.
I kept my retainer for 6 months and then stopped wearing it because it felt weirdly tight. But i still have it tucked away in storage (i cleaned it really good before putting it away).
When i asked my mom why shs got so mad (i was sensitive and always crying so i knew it wasnt that) and she told me that no doctor got to override a decision we made on our bodies, even if they think they know better than us.
I carry that with me to every doctor i visit. If i dont consent to something, then it isn't happening, and if you try to do it anyway, I'll raise hell. (Luckily, I've never had to have that fight again, but im ready for it if it happens. )
