I have been doing this exact style, the very same way you did it for as long as I've been natural (almost 3 years). Its my go to, very time consuming, pains the hell out of you arm but all worth it. I love this is and it last me atleat 3 weeks using eco styler. After about a week I start to do high puffs and a few other styles. The style is so versatile especially when it gets old.

I used to love doing finger coils when my hair was 5-6” long. When my arms & hands would get tired I used an ink pen and wrapped my hair around it and slid it off. 🤪
