A collision occurs when an object comes in contact or 'collides' with another object. A collision can occur between two objects in motion, or by an object in motion and an object at rest. During a collision, kinetic energy is transferred between the colliding objects.

A collision occurs when a tennis player hits a tennis ball. Kinetic energy is transferred from the player’s moving tennis racket to the ball, causing it to move.

During a collision, the faster an object is moving, the greater the energy transfer and the greater the impact of the collision. When a small force is used to bowl a bowling ball, a collision occurs as the ball hits the pins. A bowling ball bowled with a greater force will have more kinetic energy and will result in a greater collision.

We can also observe the impacts of collisions by looking at car accidents. When small toy cars collide, the impact of collision is minimal. When larger cars, like bumper cars collide, the impact of the collision is more noticeable. If a car is traveling at great speed at the moment of the collision, such in a vehicle crash test, there is a much more observable impact. There is likely to be more damage to the cars.
