As an Iranian-American who loves the history of the culture, thank you so much for pointing out that we can't say these technologies are the "first" of their kind. Too many times we let pride go before proof, and I love the fact that humans have had to work together and stand on the shoulders of others to advance. We can absolutely be in awe at the mastery of the technology even as we acknowledge it likely took millennia to discover and refine it to any given point.

Those ancient Persians were brilliant! They could have made my childhood comfortable. Our house was built in 1856, a two-story all-wooden structure with no insulation in one of the hottest and most humid places in the US. Old knowledge can still be valuable.

Persian ice houses were something I never would have even thought were possible. Brilliant technology for the time. Thanks for bringing this to us, Kayleigh!

*MY BUILDING HAS A WIND CATCHER ON THE ROOF* Its a communist era apartment block in Burgas, Bulgaria - it works VERY well and I don't need AC

it has a large triangular-shaped structure that faces the prevailing wind, which pressurises a column of air to the basement, then that returns cold up the riser for the water pipes and out into the bathrooms - a vent in the bathroom allows the cold air into the apartment - opening a window will increase the flow of cold air. There are dampers outside to allow a bypass if the wind is too strong - but these are completely rusted so its not as effective as it would be.

The bathrooms are fire safety cells - 20cm thick concrete walls, fire doors that open inward, fresh air supply, water supply - it was the Bulgarian Navy officers building in the times of the USSR so it was built to survive "attention" shall we say.

Wifi is a nightmare as all the rooms are fharaday cages to prevent bugging LOL

In the old school I went to, the rooms were tall, as were the windows. the windows could be opened from the bottom and the top at the same time providing a way for the warmer air to escape and drawing in cooler outside air. No AC

It's extraordinary that so many people today seem to imagine that ancient people were somehow primitive or less intelligent than we are today. In truth, they only lacked the technologies we take for granted - and which we enjoy as a result of the accumulation of shared knowledge and innovation. As individuals, they had to know so much more than we do - if they needed a tool, they had to know how to make it; if they needed a resource, they had to know where to find it and how to obtain it. They had to know how to do everything life required. We benefit from the outsourcing of the things we need; we have nothing on our ancient ancestors.

Yes the Persians were a very inventive and wise people. In fact I was researching "The golden age of Islam" when I came to realize that was IN FACT the golden age of Persia.

Thanks Kayleigh for explaining the Yakhchals, Windcatchers and Windmills? Amazing what the ancients could do. These people were incredibly smart.

For a second I had lost track of the number of people who told you this is "just a swamp cooler".

I love those . Thinking about using some Persian cooling tech in my chicken coops as the summers getting hotter and hotter and it's getting harder to keep my birds cool. Thanks!

I live in the Iranian desert (Yazd).... The secret of freezing water in the desert is related to the Qanat system... Qanat is another invention of the Iranians... They used to direct the water from the Qanats underground to places where it would freeze in the tunnels in the winter due to the cold of the ground... Then they would transfer the ice to the refrigerator for use in the summer.

I remember watching the film Kinkdom of Heaven where a crusader has an audience with Sulaiman (I think) and is brought a small wooden chest with ice in it for his drink!

An ancient Swamp Cooler. Swamp Coolers were common when I was a Kid (60’s - early 70’s). I noticed back then that they seemed to add humidity to the air. More modern looking versions are available today. I just looked them up and I’m a little amazed by that. A cool video! 😆 Thanks!😎

Pretty amazing stuff. It makes me wonder about all the technology and science that humanity has lost to the sands of time

Two things, the first if I ever had a chance to visit an ancient city somehow Persia is always my number one choice. I mean actually getting to see it in its full Glory. Second whoever is saying this is not air conditioning does not realize the meaning of air conditioning. Anytime you are changing the characteristics of the air around you you are conditioning it. It doesn't matter if you're draining the humidity out of it or just lowering the temperature. Also in certain designs they had the air to flow over water which would remove moisture from the air or rehydrate the air depending on what you needed. It's not an active air conditioning system but it's still a passive system.
