Doing Justice for LGBTQ2S+ Youth in Health and Social Services

Homophobia and transphobia fundamentally shape the health and well-being of LGBTQ2+ young people. LGBTQ2+ youth are significantly more likely to struggle with mental health problems, to experience homelessness and to have substance use issues, but are less likely to access health and social services, and less likely to receive the inclusive care they need when they do. This webinar will provide participants with an introduction to LGBTQ2+ inclusion in health and social services, with a particular emphasis on shifting organizational culture, and bringing LGBTQ2+ inclusion into your everyday practice. Building on two key reports co-authored by Wisdom2Action this year, focused on LGBTQ2+ youth and Gender-Based Violence, and the mental health of LGBTQ2+ emerging adults, which highlight the systemic barriers that shape the health of LGBTQ2+ young people, and the expertise of Wisdom2Action's team on LGBTQ2+ inclusion, this webinar will equip participants with the knowledge, tools and skills they need to do better by, for and with LGBTQ2+ in their workplace and practice.

Presenter:

Fae Johnstone (they/she) is the Senior Associate of Engagement and Mobilization with Wisdom2Action Ltd. She is a sought-after educator, consultant and facilitator working on unceded, unsurrendered Algonquin territory (Ottawa, ON). As an expert on LGBTQ2+ inclusion in education and health and social services, Fae has trained thousands of educators and service providers in Canada and around the world. With Wisdom2Action, Fae has led projects focused on LGBTQ2+ youth and Gender-Based Violence, Anti-Oppression in Youth Engagement, Children's Rights and School Mental Health. Fae is a writer and community organizer, with a long history of organizing campaigns and rallies for the rights of marginalized groups and LGBTQ2+ communities in particular. She is a freelance writer with Xtra, Canada's LGBTQ2+ newspaper, and regularly publishes in the Huffington Post and the Ottawa Citizen. She has served on the board of directors of LGBT Youth Line, the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, and currently sits on the Strategic Advisory Council of the Ontario Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health, and the Champlain LHIN Regional Planning Table to Trans and Gender Diverse Health. Fae holds a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and is currently pursuing her Masters of Social Work at Carleton University.
