Cutting up broken cymbals - make a smaller cymbal! NO LATHE!

I had some broken Zildjians lying around, so i tried to cut them into smaler cymbals without using fancy tools.
Don't try any of this at home. This is not a how-to-video, it's just entertainment, like the A-Team.

Josef, I cannot thank you enough for this instructional video. I've watched a few homemade lathe videos, but this is the easiest and safest way to repair cymbals. THANK YOU!!! VERY INGENIOUS!!

Very cool, good work!!
Back in the 70’s, I got a 24” Zildjian from a pawn shop, it had a big bell and sounded great untill it developed a crack that turned into a 3” by 2” chunk out of it! My brother, a Welder, took it to work and had a machinist turn it on a lathe. The end result was a 17and 3/4” ride that sounded amazing!!
I always got compliments on how it sounded, and offers to buy it! It sounded kind of like an AAX metal ride but much better! It was one of a kind!

the cable ties scene is really smart 😂. instead of buying longer one you cut a bit the wood. i admire your idea

Man, you literally answered the question I asked the internet)I hope now the cymbals still serve you) even the cymbals set on the trim is about the same. Thanks a lot and may the groove be with you)

Lol. Back in my drumming years I never tossed away broken cymbals. I found and or made use by either making them worse or reshaping them just messing around. The hard part was placement of the odd shape. Lol

I took a friends cracked cymbals to work and plasma cut the edge off with a circle cutting attachment.
Cleaned up the edge with a flap disc. Works a treat.

I think you should also scratch the surface of the cymbal. The reduced thickness would produce a sound more suited to the smaller diameter. If you do, please register it in a new video and let us know!

Great mods! I love cutting up old cymbals. Though usually I deburr the edges with a Dremel and the carbon steel brush tip :)

Really excellent technique/application. I never thought to do it like that.

I just got an angle grinder, specifically for this purpose. But I’m going to cut mine straight across, cut the segment that includes the cracks. Cut it past the visible crack line. Hypothesis being that the weight of the other side will pull it down, toward the striking area. This should preserve much of the sound character, and allow the cymbal to be played a few more years before getting the circular cut-down.

It's great when you don't have to reduce the diameter too much. In most cases I try to just cut a wide U shape and use more drastic solutions when I'm not satisfied with the more conservative way

How are you cracking the cymbal in between the nut and outside edge of the cymbal without cracking the outside edges?

Just discovered this video now. Really amazed by the creative and manufacturing process!

Question though, what about the rings that you cut? Did you throw them away like regular garbage, or is there a brand of cymbal which can collect them and maybe recycle them into new cymbals?

that way you attack the dishes there is no dish on this planet that will not break, attack the dishes by whipping, scraping sideways.no attack from the front and straight as you do at the beginning of the video, this will only generate a new crack, it is a question of time, I leave this tip for all drummers, I have been teaching drums for over 27 years. embrace of the Eddrums Brasil drum institute.
