Sounds a bit like the British 2008 horror film The Children which was set at Christmas time in a remote house where for some reason the British kids become a bit murderous against their parents.

Mark Kermode dubs that sub genre as Pediophobia.

I wouldn't worry too much about the children. They can always be replaced

Everything about the plot made me think this was an American remake of Here Comes the Devil from Mexico in 2012

I know you're not big on the superhero/action stuff, but there's a short Halloween special set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe called "Werewolf By Night" that is VERY stylized and lots of spooky fun, directed by Michael Giacchino. It channels a lot of classic horror vibes throughout the run time. It's very much just digging into the horror corner of the MCU, and there's no "homework" to be done (in terms of watching any other MCU connected things) to fully enjoy it! I know that's probably the last thing anybody was thinking of in response to your question, but I just rewatched it the other day, so it was already on my mind 😅

Aw man I was hoping for the best but this is exactly the way I was worried it would go based on the trailer. Thank you for your in depth (yet spoiler free) analysis on this one! I’ll probably skip it! That is frustrating because the potential here was so great with its premise!

It drives me nuts when I’m having to constantly turn up the sound to hear the dialogue, only to frantically turn it down for the music and sound effects.
I’ve literally given up on some films because of this.

The director of "The Viewing" episode 7 of Cabinet of Curiosities is the same director as Mandy. He's name is Panos Cosmatos.
By the way I think that is hands down the best episode of the whole series.

It was better than ninety percent of the last twenty movies I’ve tried to watch.

The description of the plot sounds a lot like a film called Here Comes the Devil, which I thought was very good. If this is an American remake, I highly suggest you check out the Mexican version.

Agree. Were they trying for a goblinesque music theme? And when you find out what happened to the children, let me know!

Oh my, I watched it last night and was confused. I was wondering what was that wasn't working, with all these different styles, the sometimes awkward performances, the music. I'm not alone, you're expressing a lot of my thoughts. Thaaaanks I love you

There is a book called The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing. Kind of a horror novel. It tells the story of a family who has a fifth child and the mess "it" brings.

One of the best retro stylization films I’ve seen is The Love Witch.

Can you do the review about Sick 2023 horror trhriler movie?

For a second I thought this was related to the comic book “Something is Killing the Children.” Thankfully, not. That comic would need a tv series to do it justice.

The very first song during the opening titles, it's "Sisters of Mercy - More" ...plus I love well done 80s synth scores, this one was just nice, nothing special - a 6+/10 probably. Cool movie tho, i enjoyed it.

Nice concept .. but this movie didn't spook me, it irritated me with how unrealistic the grown ups reacts, the bad writing, the strange vibes, the forced tension, the misplaced music etc..

Mandy is my favorite film by far. The amazingly talented director behind it, Panos Cosmatos, also directed The Viewing episode you mentioned. I cannot wait for his next movie project Nekrokosm which is currently in production. His first film, Beyond the Black Rainbow, is pure genius. It must be in his DNA for his father directed quite possibly the greatest western of all time. Tombstone.

An alternative to this film might be 'Here Comes the Devil' (a Spanish language film from several years back)
