Our First Time Launching an Estes Rocket

I bought an Estes Rocket starter pack at the flea market for $3 and this is my experience taking it out to the field with Clark and attempting a launch.

Greg's World is my video journal where I document my life and the people, pets, places, and things in it. My goal is to record as much as possible to create a "video time capsule" to look back on in the future.

The joy on the Clark's face!! These are the type of experiences that drive careers. This was a great secondary buy that turned into a great experience. " I like the smell" :) He is so adorable and at such a great age. Enjoy the this new found way to have fun together. Have a great Saturday guys!!

The melted parachute is definitely caused by an improper wadding pack. The wadding is supposedly fireproof, so the parachute damage is caused by the engine's ejection charge. It looks like the wadding burned, but this is merely melted parachute clinging to the wadding. More wadding, packed well but not so tight that it would inhibit the nose cone from ejecting. Hats off to you guys, you have a great family relationship :)

Safety tip: I keep the launch "Key" tied to the plastic rail protector (cap). Leave the rail protector on until the igniter is connected, then remove the cap, walk back to launch controller and put the key in. Great video! Make the wadding "big" very loosely packed so it makes a seal in the body tube. I've scorched a few 'chutes in my launches :)

The whish sound of a rocket launching is ingrained in my mind! So many launches as a kid will do that!

I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.

Awesome, me my dad, and brother used to launch rockets like this in a corn field after he harvested. Fun times keep doing these rocket videos.

Oh man, this brings back memories. My Dad got me a model rocket like this for me when I was a kid. I’m not sure if it’s the same model, but it has a remarkable resemblance. I remember going to the local high-school football field and launching it with him. Good times.

Edit: I’m just adding this now, but you’re a good Dad. Keep up everything you’re doing,

I was into model rocketry. I had a few them that I lost in a tree or on someone's apartment patio. I had one that had a built in mini camera.that actually worked also had a few that had a payload, has one that caught on fire during flight. It's a great and affordable Hobbie, rockets are easy to put together. Have a great weekend.

Our family was launching rockets on Thanksgiving one year and one of the rockets almost went through the neighbor's window.

I love seeing a young one so excited about rockets and space.
I am a rocket lover myself and hopefully you would not mind a couple of suggestions for your wind and launch area size.
Launch from the side of the field closest to the direction of the wind. Next is to tilt the launch rod ever so slightly into the wind.
Have fun.😊

Thanks to California, you can't walk into any store in the entire state and buy an Estes rocket. You can order them on line according to their website. When I was your kids age in the late 60s early 70s I lived in Ohio and we built and fired these as often as we could save up the money. Nice thing was, we lived in a new housing development. A former dairy farm so there were some houses but no trees for acres.

TIp: when loading your parachute fold it in half after you. Roll it up. Don’t wrap strings around chute.. the string can hamper the chute deploying. You were twisting the string when you wrapped around chute….

You should check out Kennedy Space Centre next time you're in Florida. Definitely try to take Clark to see one of the real rocket launches. I bet he'd love that.
