Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Sunday his government will invest $240 million on virtual healthcare as the country continues to deal with the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The prime minister said the funds will go towards new online platforms for mental health supports and primary care for those don’t need to visit a doctor in person. The funding would also allow “specialized tools” to be available for those who belong to marginalized communities.
Trudeau also spoke about the next steps as some Canadian provinces prepare to begin reopening their economy. He said he’s confident the economy will “come roaring back” once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted because of the strength of the economy going into the pandemic.
Trudeau also announced that in May parents would be given a $300 top-up per child on the Canada child benefit (CCB).
Trudeau also addressed gun control during his Sunday briefing, as well as reports the novel coronavirus originated in a Wuhan, China laboratory. He said its “too early to draw any conclusions” on the origins of the virus.
On gun control, Trudeau said that in addition to the assault-style weapons ban recently introduced his government would be bringing in additional gun control measures “when parliament allows it” that will include restrictions around safe storage, borders and measures that would permit municipalities to ban handguns.
