I live in Alice Springs, and one of my tasks at work is to take the mail out to several remote communities. There's no postman out there, you pick up your mail at the council office or the town shop, depending on the community. Most places get mail twice a week unless it rains and the roads close.

i think for the climate variation one, Australia isn't up there because we have no tall mountains, meaning our temps even on the mountains we have never go below about -20C/-4F

Ranga is short for orangutang. Wasn’t a thing when I was at school but became a thing in my children’s era. Not very PC but typically accepted

When I lived in WA - there was contracted mail posties to go to country areas to deliver mail. Most mail will be held at the General Store that will be used as an Australia Post Agency that does send / receive mail & provide government services / banking too.

Hi Ian, something that may interest you. The Holden Museum is (re) opening in Coffs Harbour tomorrow at AEST 9am

bluey is like calling a giant of a man tiny, ranga (rang-uh) is slang for orangutan and red headed rat rooter is a friendly jibe.

You said: "It is empty as hell out there". But believe me, the hell is crowded… 🥵😉

It's hot, but we get more snow than Switzerland

The postmen probably use airplanes for their deliveries... :)

Yeah I used live in that post code. A place called Tennant creek. The U.S. spy base Pine Gap is in that post code is in that postcode as well

0872 is half the NT. I have known that forever.I had no idea in incringed into WA and SA.
Most of that area has no delivery. Pick up from regional centres only.
50 years ago that was the case 14 miles from Adelaide. My grandmother was the postmistress from WW1 to the mid 70s as a temporary! Every night more and more people would come to the temporary PO to pick up their mail. It did get a bit better as there was mail delivery to the more built up parts of the area. In the end she had to quit as she could not see, , and her husband was too unwell to help. She was 85!

The postcode for Alice Springs is 0870, so that town is not included, although it's in that area. The population would be mostly remote Indigenous communities rather than towns in all States of NT, SA and WA.

Probably already said that the rabbits were important for hunting but the bunnies got busy and they became a plague devastating the native flora and fauna, scientists ended up introducing a virus called myxomatosis which was successful in controlling the bunny population. The government didn't learn from the past and introduced the Cane Toad to control a beetle that was destroying the sugar cane crop but the Toads are toxic and have had similar results as the Rabbits, another wonderful import was the Prickly Pear which was introduced by the first colonists, it also liked Australian conditions and lack of natural control and went berserk, well worth looking up

0872 has seen an uptick in tourists with the spefic goal of amatuer star gazing in recent years.
low light pollution and a night sky you can't see in most of the world anymore.

on mail delivery a lot of the mail is not delivered to a house mailbox (outside of Alice springs). Instead will go to a local community shop grocery store style place and you pick it up from there on the weekly 2 hour drive for supplies and mail.

as far as being the 'most Australian'.. I consider that to be the most 'ocker' and most traditional .. and its anywhere up north really. Northern Qld, Northern Territory and Northern WA. Slower pace, more relaxed people, great weather, flies and all the stuff everyone hates. Mosquitoes that you can hear flying toward you from afar. But if you go to any remote community (and some rural farming areas which are intergenerational) you'll see traditional aussies.

Red heads called bluey's because it's the opposite of red

Yep, in Oz, you'd be called a ginger, a ranga (without a strong g pronunciation; short for orangutan) or bluey 😊 We love our slang 😅

Looks as though there is a postcode enclave in northern WA.

Western Australia is the second largest sub-division on earth surpassed only by the Sakha Republic in eastern Russia. Put in persoective....Greenland, Nunavut, Alaska, Queensland and Texas are the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th and 26th largest respectively. NT, South Australia and New South Wales are all in the top 20 largest sub-divisions.
