If there's one thing that has made me a better photographer more than anything else, it's tethering! In this video I explain WHY and HOW including HOW to Tether using Sony, PLUS an extra tip at the end about HOW to help people become more CONFIDENT in-front of the camera.

Totaaly agree Glyn- recently purchased the Cam Ranger 2. Amazingly fast RAW transfers, wirelessly to any mobile device...transformational!

Something I've found has improved me a lot as a photographer is actually speeding up rather than slowing down. I've been joining friends on hiking trips in Scotland climbing some of our beautiful mountains. There's been countless places and times we've been where I would have liked to stop for a few hours to get set up for the perfect shots, but being part of a group that's continually moving with only small breaks every now and then has forced me to have to think on my feet about good shots, I've learned more about my camera and can nail down the perfect settings for the shots I want quicker. Obviously preparation and patience is a key element of good photography (especially landscapes) but limiting the time I have to take shots and the number of shots I can take like this has definitely improved my photography, there's definitely benefits to both slowing down and speeding up I think

Hi Glyn, big thanks for this vid. I always wanted to look into tethering to show others what I'm shooting. I was planning to link my laptop to a pc projector, but kept struggling on tethered capture as I too am shooting Sony. I will now look into smart shooter 4 as an interface.

Many thanks. Very helpful. Tried to tether in past and would have loved to have this option available.

Delighted to see this availability for Lightroom. I did try it a couple of times but it was a bit sluggish. I have a very small space to work in, but will try to shoot tethered from now on. Very glad you did not recommend an alternative product, which I find prohibitively expensive!

nice review. just purchased smart shooter 5 (win11) for Sony a7rv, launched it in LV and it works fine. Then launched lightroom classic and could take pictures. But cannot have liveview inside LRC as we can have inside capture one. Did i miss something ?

Great bit of info shared here, shooting tethered in the conmercial world is invaluable. Sony's refusal to work with Adobe is a pain in the butt, so glad Smart Shooter exists.
That final tip about getting excited about your own work is something I have always done without thinking about it. Back in the film days (and still now), when I saw something good happening I may even do a little involuntary dance. I had never really considered that this had a positive effect on my subjects and clients, thinking about it now I realise that when I get excited about what is being produced and my lighting then the atmosphere in general lifts and the subject maybe realises that the emohasis is on me to produce good work and not on them. Obviously if you are using models then they do have a job to do, but with portraiture it really is down to us.
Nice one, maybe next time I get back to the UK we can have a wander and a landscape shoot, maybe throw a drone up, would be fun.

What kind of cable are you using to connect your Sony A7Riv, and how do you secure it to the camera?

After buying my tether tools cable, and using my Sony A7RIV I got the Sony Imaging Edge to work in Live view, then after watching this decided to buy Smart Shooter 4, I must say I am having a massive headache with it and cant get it to work properly! I can see live view in Smart Shooter, setup LR and activated the Plugin, and when I take a shot LR does not import correctly because Smart Shooter is saving the files in 2 different folders, a few shots will go into the Smart Shooter folder and others go into the child Folder I named when activating the plugin called Test Shoot, they are not importing and have to right click the folder and click Synchronise Folder then it can see new images there, that's when I found they were randomly going into these 2 different folders and not importing! I can not find a way to fix it and get it working and I am pulling my hair out! The save folder in Smart Shooter is in a folder called Smart Shooter 4 and that is the folder I set in LR to import too? I also get a message in LR saying "A Captured File Could Not Be Saved, Your Drive maybe full or may longer be accessible" I am confused. Am I missing something, if anyone reads this that can help I would be very grateful, I know you're not support Glyn and you use a MAC and this is Windows I am using, so don't worry about trying to help if you're not sure, however if you are then by all means fire away. Many thanks Ryan.
