Yes, that is exactly right. In fact, doing a F.O.I.L. on (a+bi)(a-bi) is a demonstration of exactly that. It is what we would call the "general case" rather than a specific example, because it works with any numbers for a and b.

@7PunkCyber That's correct! When the imaginary part is zero, though, we don't usually call it a complex number, although what you say is correct. Every real number could be considered complex with imaginary part zero.

(a+bi)(a+bi) stands for the complex: ( x, y ) = ( a^2-b^2, ab+ba), also written as (a^2-b^2)+(ab+ba)i and if you put a real value for a, b you get the complex number (x, y). That's what a complex number is, a pair of two reals, i is the symbol of such a pair.
