You could drop it a few more decibels if you drilled a hole in that wall and put the air intake outside underneath a rain guard like you would put on a dryer exhaust

That works great,
Now to remove water before the air enters the tank.
Buy a cheap AC condenser coil for a car pipe the cssor air from the pump into that condenser, Run a automotive blower fan on the cendencor, as the air exits the unit at the bottom place a line water separator and oiling unit.
That's going to cut way down on how wet the tank is and extend its life as well as your tools, you can also run a copper coil into a tank of cold water to pull off the heat from the pump cool the air and separate the water from the air stream.
Or use underground copper lines buried about 15" below the dirt. or below the frost line this will help remove the water too and cool the air.
Any one of these ideas will help cool the air and remove water, then you can draw air from outside the shop and cut even more noise out Just make sure you put the inlet in some kind of filter box to keep bugs or whatnot out of the system.

The ac coil system I was thinking of that some 40 years ago along with a fan, think about it those system are under high pressure so it can handle a compressor before the check valve with no problem in fact you might get away with a car radiator because the check valve is what helps a compressor build up pressure in small bursts..
A pump alone really dosn't put out that much air all at once unless you have a screw type compressor instead of a piston type. for that much you can turn a lawnmower motor into a compressor pump its probably not going to work as good but it will work. Just install a check valve in the spark plug hole and use the exhaust pipe as the tank feed plug off the fuel hole you'll also need to remove the valves for intake and exhaust. you'll also need a check valve on the tank.
This should turn the motor into a pump. I don't think you can turn a pump into a motor so don't think about it they do not have valves.

Personally, I'd prefer not to have a muffler that sheds fiberglass strands into the intake on my compressor, but each to their own.

Correct me if my understanding is incorrect, but the muffler not only reduces the noise level, but also restricts the air flow which results in a reduction of engine power (hp). This solution defeats the purpose of spending the extra money on a powerful air compressor.

Another solution I see is to build a box with foam around the air compressor to silence the noise. Let me know your input guys.
