The best mod in my opinion is ancient warfare 2 (this is for 1.12.2) you can train army’s and give your warriors the armor and weapon of your choice, rule a village and expand it

You can also get some defenses like balistas and trebuchets and mount some on boats to raid the village of another faction on water or on land (you can also move some defenses on land), it actually requires skill and strategies to raid friends bases and such

You can also get villagers to get resources for you, its a really great mod for servers or playing with friends!
(Its also fun in singleplayer)
