How A Chapter Break Can Ruin a Bible Story

Показать описание
Artificial chapter breaks, added centuries after the original manuscripts of the Bible were written, can obscure the underlying narrative, skewing interpretation. By fragmenting the seamless flow of events and teachings, they can isolate connected elements, creating potential for misinterpretation.

Thus, understanding the Bible's original continuity is crucial, as these chapter breaks, while offering reading ease, might inadvertently mask the nuanced interplay of messages inherent in the unbroken text.

One example is the story of the "Widow's Gift" in Luke 21. Another deeper systemic problem with chapter breaks is how the natural structure of the Gospel of Matthew is divided up into 5 discourses that neatly mirror the 5 books of the Torah. However, by dividing Matthew up into 28 artificial chapters, this structure is completely erased.

A few years ago, the Bibliotheca project on Kickstarter published a beautiful edition of the Bible without any chapter or verse markings. Very immersive and easy to get lost in!

The irony here is that it says "beware the scribes", and this very part shows why

Sounds like the scribes took that personally

My mind has been blown. This is absolutely wild stuff. We hear the story of the widow who gave her last penny so often, but not with the context of the verse before it

"Beware of the scribes..."
Scribe: Wowa there, CHAPTER BREAK

This reminds me of my pastor who stressed that we should read the verses in context (read the verses that come before and after, and pay attention to the chapter that came before). Some of the best advice that I have ever received on how to deepen my faith.

This is why you can't use single verses without context

Yes! Whenever I hear the 'widow's mite' I want to scream "theses are the men who are supposed to be supporting the widow;they are comanded by God to do so. Jesus wasn't calling out the sacrifice of the widow (who was trying to follow the laws of the temple), he was calling out the leaders for ignoring the laws of God."

I hate it when they do this!

Some of Paul's letters become almost unintelligible because of bad chapter breaks

Same story as with

“Don’t, wait for me” and “don’t wait for me”

That was extremely interesting thanks for clarifying. It’s interesting how literature can be distorted by grammar

Theres a section on Romans that when read all together its a letter to one of the rulers at the time.
The “chapters” and headers completely change the context of the letter.

He’s not praising the widow for the gift, he’s condemning the scribes for taking the gift. She’s giving all that she has to live on, and the scribes accept it - they should be saying no, and praying for her regardless. That’s the point. Not that giving your last coin to the church is some kind of virtue.

This is why I go by the rule: when reading a Bible quote or passage, always read 5 lines before and 5 lines after, to ensure you have the proper context.

This is why I started a habit of ignoring chapter / topic breaks. Especially in the epistles, it drastically changes your perception to read a whole book straight through.

Jesus knew the scribes would be messing with that verse.

As a Christian this was actually very useful to know.

Edit. Wow I turned off my notifications for certain things on YouTube and recently turned them back on and find that I have over 1k likes and a little back and forth in the replies here. So I just want to state clear where I stand. I would say I'm a non-denominational Christian. I belong to Jesus. My favorite teaching that he gave was the sermon on the mount because of the beatitudes. When I look to Jesus I keep to my heart that he wanted us to love each other. So I do just that, I don't care about what kind of Walk of Life that you come from or what kind of sins you may carry because it's none of my business. But I do care if you at least had a personal experience with Jesus or if you wish to have a very personal relationship with him. Jesus came here to save us from our sin by paying the debt it carries in our place. He came for the sinner's so that we might too have an eternity with him. I don't follow any mega churches or anything like that, I go to a church that's in my community here and I can literally walk to it and its doors are open to everyone because Jesus died for everyone. I see this talk about right evangelism and they actually teach a little evangelism a little in my church. But evangelism here is essentially "you have a very short amount of time to show Jesus to someone who doesn't have Jesus. So how do you do it?" It's a missionary practice here. And quite frankly it's one that I agree with in the sense that I would love to see everybody go to heaven and experience Jesus. I don't support churches taking the teaching and twisting it to forward their own personal agenda. But I do support taking the teaching and using it to spread the overwhelming neverending reckless love of God. Politically I stand no where. I have siblings in heaven waiting for me to get there so I can love them more personally.

To anyone who might find my position to be their opposition I say this, "blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you because of me." These are the words I choose to clench in my chest today. I hope that instead of raising a sword towards me instead you dust off your sandals and walk on. But it would bring me joy if you decided to take some time to at least try to learn who Jesus is and how he feels about the sheep who went astray. I find some days I am that sheep myself. I find other days that others are that sheep too or instead and that Jesus loves you so regardless I pray that his love be with you.

To those of you throwing stones at each other in the comment section. "Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy." "Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God" bury the hatchet and move on. Drop your swords and say a prayer of love instead for your enemies. and if it's not your kind of crowd or not your kind of thing, I'm pretty sure there's something else you can be doing that brings you some positive energy. So I pray that you may have a nice day and that Jesus be with you regardless of your position towards him!

Have a blessed day!

When I was growing up and attending church that scripture was always used to say that it's okay if you're offering is small and if you make a lot of money, you shouldn't feel like a hot-shot for giving a big offering. Basically, don't compare your offering to others.

The funny thing is, there is a version of translation where the Greek word means "tossed", not "gave" - as in "tossed away", "threw away", as in "wasted". As in, "this widow has threw away/tossed away/wasted [on those same widow-eaters] more out of her poverty than the rich man did."
