I sat the day before yesterday for 4 hours in "my" Greek restaurant. I ate something and drank a beer, then by chance a few acquaintances came in. They also ate something and everyone drank a beer. Because I still had to drive a car, I added 2 coke in the whole time. The rest of the time we spent just talking to each other. Nobody from the waitress or the owner even came up with the idea of throwing us out or even hinting that we should make room. I think that's typically European.A restaurateur likes it first and foremost that you feel comfortable in his restaurant and second comes the income. And when it came to soccer, the Greek owner was of course also there, after all, Dortmund is in a sporting crisis and without our sporting expertise they can't get out of it again.

And of course you didn't have to pay anything for the toilets. Maybe it's different, where the strongholds of tourism are.

As to waiters: as long as you have you menu open or keep looking at it, they will assume you're still look8ng or choosing. They usually come twice, once for drinks and once for food.

The crazy thing is that we look very similar but are very different in many ways. I find the way people are served in the US very strange. Why does a waitress call me "honey" or constantly get on my nerves when I'm eating? All the socializing in your country is very superficial and means nothing. Here you only call someone a friend if they are. You invite people over if you mean it seriously and not to say something nice. Above all, the prudishness is really strange. A country with the largest porn industry acts as if sex is something indecent. Lastly, please finally learn the metric system, the whole world uses it, oh yes and don't call your handball football, put the tax and the price of things together and and and.😊

If you are strolling around a town in Europe, unless it is really hot, you probably need around 2 litres of liquid a day, maybe a touch more. That includes tea/coffee/water/juice… just not booze. The fact that Europeans aren’t dropping like flies from thirst or kidney disease probably means that they are reasonably well hydrated. It is interesting that the US guidance on hydration states almost double the recommended intake (3.7 ltrs per day) compared to the UK (2 ltrs per day). If you are thirsty, drink, but this obsession with staying hydrated is weird, unless you are doing something strenuous. Strolling around a town is not strenuous, and if you have a drink with your meals, and the occasional glug from your bottle, or quick sit down for a drink in a cafe, you won’t turn into a pile of dust. It seems weird to a lot of Europeans that some Americans obsess so over water.

If you keep the menu open you show that you are still searching. And no one here like it been ask if all is fine every 2 min.

Hi Nate, you can just go into the Gas station and ask the cashier for the toilet key. Toilets are locked in Gasstations but you can use them for free.

Anyone who doesn't have problems creates them.

Happy to hear, you're finally moving! ❤

The is bad manners and annoys a lot of us Germans, too.

American tourists are often thinking that the glass deposit (Pfand) allows them to own the glass (that might have an imprint and therefore becomes probably interesting as a souvenir).
Guess what happens during a single evening - the shops are running out of glasses because they "disappear" - only to pop up again in NY, NC, TX, …

"the customer is always right' the rest of that sentence is "in terms of taste". It does not mean the customer is a king and wait staff/shop workers are serfs to do their bidding

in Germany and most places in Europe nobody will rush you out of a restaurant. Generally a visit to a restaurant most of the time will last for the whole evening. And even after you have played the bill they won't complement you out of the location. It's not all about tips over here in the old world.

Hi, the problem of the Americans is that they are afraid when someone stands close to them because they could hurt them or attack them, I am from the Czech Republic, it is right on the border from Germany, it may be different, but I think it The Americans have rooted that anyone could attack them when they are close. Europeans do not even think that someone would attack them, so they do not mind smaller personal space.

Nah, it is basically the same as in NL. You need to ask but when they're busy, pay the till or at the bar.

The bed thing. Partner and I have slept on a king size bed with one matress together for 8 years (ofc each with our own pillow and blanket), cause he bought a new one just before we moved in together. In the beginning it was fine, but after a while our working (and sleeping) schedules started to overlap. Both our sleep qualities got much worse. I am a VERY 'active' sleeper: I need forever to fall asleep and i move a lot in the process. And i also move a lot in my sleep, so much that even my heavy sleeper partner would half wake up. On the other hand, partner falls asleep within minutes and he does not move as much - but i'm a very light sleeper. His occational turning kept me more awake and woke me up several times a night. Additionally, after turning 30, we both noticed that we'd feel stiff in the neck or back after sleeping.
2 years ago we finally cashed in on a couple bed, with 2 separate matresses. And OMAGOSH such a difference! I fall asleep so much faster and i don't even notice him moving (or even coming to bed, when i go to sleep first) and he isn't bothered by my constant tossing and turning - which has reduced drastically too. And there is no back pain from sleeping anymore, it's amazing.
Also, when sleeping alone and spreading out over the whole bed (making the starfish pose) is no problem, cause we both chose more firm matresses that crack between them is not even noticable.

1. Paying 25% tips is no problem at all, but paying for a clean toilet drives USasian crazy .. that something that really annoys me as a german.
Also of course, thats just for public toilets so that everybody can use without maybe paying for drinks or a meal in a bar/restaurant.
2. You are correct. Like you said it can happen when its ultra busy but else just give them a call when you are ready and thats it.
3. Yeah the good ole american slaveholder mentality where every person have to bow down for them, "yes master how can we server you today, was master happy ? should i give master a whip so he can punish me if he was not satisfied ? " 🙄
We are just not sooo brainwashed that we think serving people in a job we only do because we need to to earn the money we need for a living, is everything that makes us happy.
4. Total bullshit, never ever experienced that in my 60 years. I mean it can maybe happen everywhere like its maybe the same in the subway in Berlin like in New York, but not here in the tram in Bremen and maybe also not in Kansas (if they have public transport there )
5. Agree with what you said about the personal space, i also hate when people are too close in the line to me, but thats it.
6. Especially if you have a massive guy like Wolter as husband his wife would maybe enjoy when she doesn't have to sleep every night on the same matraze than him because at some point his part is maybe so much lower that she will roll down to him every night 😂🤣
And sorry for the sarcasm but there is some truth behind it.
8. No shopping on sunday .. i will never ever understand why the else ooooh so holy and religious bible loving american have a problem with that. Why ? Read your damned bible again :

"Exodus 35:2
Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death."

It's not annoying, it's just the difference called culture. If you find it annoying instead of interesting - stay at home. The goal of traveling normally is to learn about other cultures.

In the tourist areas in my state Schleswig-Holstein you can shop on sundays during the season. It's because many people stay in apartments and usually stay from saturday to saturday. So stores are open 7 days a week.

If you get annoyed in a foreign country because you can't adapt: just stay at home! So easy! Would spare us all a lot of trouble! And would also be ecofriendly!
