Sometimes the greatest musicals don’t need a Tony to legitimize their place on Broadway.

Next to Normal lost Best Musical and then proceeded to win a freakin Pulitzer prize so they should be an honorable mention for real

A Chorus Line is widely seen as deserving to win over Chicago because it not only revolutionized musical theater in general, particularly with its choreography, but it literally saved Broadway from the brink of extinction, because in the 1970s, Broadway was literally a dying industry on its last legs.

Honestly, both Wicked and Avenue Q are perfect musicals, for very different reasons 💚🧡

Nathan lane's face when he announces Avenue q as best musical over Wicked is low key like "WTF really?"

Not to shade Wicked, but it's a very "Broadway show" with a lot of flash. Avenue Q is kinda the opposite, so it's substance shows more than Wicked which substance is easily overlooked because of it.

The Wicked loss was actually kinda a scandal. The committee was pissed that Wicked was refusing to tour for a few years and wanted to keep it kinda exclusive in NYC and Chicago. They were miffed so gave it to Avenue Q as punishment

As great as Into the Woods is, I definitely think The Phantom of the Opera deserved that one. Glad ITW probably came in second though!

"Falsettos" lost to "Crazy for you" which was BS.
"Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812" lost to "deh"
"The Light in the Piazza" lost to "Spamelot"
"The Color Purple" to "Jersey Boys"
"Parade" lost to "Fosse"
"Ragtime" lost to "The Lion King"
"The Life" lost "Titanic"
"Follies" lost to "Two Gentlemen of Verona"

I know this is about non-revival broadway best musical Tony’s, but the 2016 falsettos revival was snubbed.

It sucks how Sondheim musicals get shafted on Best Musical wins

The problem that I have with the Tonys nowadays is that they usually give all or at least most of the awards to one musical, even if another musical deserved it in at least one category. Like this year, the Band's Visit won everything. It's not really my type of show, but it does have nice music and acting, however there were a few shows that deserved some of the awards it got. Like, imo Tina Fey should have won Best Book (Mean Girls won nothing, which is such a shame to me, it was amazing) and I think Ethan Slater deserved Best Actor. I don't really have much of a problem with the Band's Visit; I actually quite like it, but I don't think it deserved all those awards

Really? Chicago? A Chorus Line literally saved Broadway.

Dang, Phantom vs. Into the woods? I'd hate to have to choose.

A lot of these depend on the context.

Like West Side Story- it was controversial in its day. It was more of a 60s musical than a 50s musical.

Also, while not really surprising, I'm just going to throw out Come From Away. I know these past few years have had awesome shows that have been a bit overshadowed by a super star, but maybe I'm just sad come from away didn't win...

As a giant Disney Fan myself I gotta fight back on the Once inclusion here. It was a perfect simple film and translated beautifully to the stage with the small and inclusive bar setting. When the cast all harmonizes on When Your Minds Made Up or Falling Slowly(Which already won an oscar) it showed how powerful that musical and story was I’m still sad it’s off broadway now

Okay but POTO was meant to win with the absolute humongous amount of love
