I'm a senior. I've had projectors since the 80's. I've gone bigger and bigger. I never achieved the "being in the cinema" feeling until I installed a 180" 16 x 9 screen. That is 13 ft wide.
I'm sitting 12 feet away. It puts me in an IMAX theater, front row of the stadium seating section. My previous 150" screen was cinematic with 16 x 9 material but a little too small for scope. The scope image is so big now that you don't notice the black bars. Go big if you can, you won't be sorry.

As someone who has made 3 theaters for myself and friends, make sure your screen is not to high. I find the biggest mistake is that people place there display way to high and then it makes it hard to watch for extended periods of time. Do not measure your display while you are standing. Measure while sitting in your on your seat. A good rule of thumb is your head should be in the center of the screen while seated. Measure your eye sight while you are seated, its usually around 3'. Then you know the center of the screen should be 3' from the floor, the exact height depends on the size of your screen. If you have a 2nd row and u are using a riser, then measure for the front row as thats the row you will probably be in the most (everyone is different and the correct answer is what every you prefer).

Hold off on a remote until you know you need one. I suspect for a lot of us, were using a streaming device like apple4k or nvidia shield. Both of those remotes can control your streaming device, turn on/off your AVR/Projector (or you can connect a 12v trigger) and the volume.

I have the R700's. Make sure you have a good external amp. They require a lot of power

H-C, great theatre tips bid... I especially agree with smart/ fun lighting. Nothing makes the funhouse more exciting than the perfect mood lighting.
If I may suggest, don't forget about the newer poorer hobbyists that can't afford the better seating or ideal screens yet... Carry content that everyone can relate to or use. You don't want to limit your channel too much from the wider market... you want to grow your numbers too... Do both at the same time.
Cheers and good luck. :)

Love it Mr Cowboy! The budget is a great idea, though everyone will always go over it. Good point on "you don't have to buy everything at once". I would recommend getting the basics first, projector, Screen (spend more on the screen as you can upgrade the projector down the road. there is always upgrades in technology, but little upgrades one screens). Use a sound bar if you don't have the funds to get a great sound system yet. you can always add down the road.

There’s an new universal remote control alternative to Harmony: Sofabaton X1
I’ve always used Harmony and now this new remote. Works very well, Sofabaton did a great job and meanwhile the only useable alternative for the Harmony.

Loved the content, thanks for the advice! I'm doing the research now to build out a home theater in 18-24 months, so I'm looking for all the tips and tricks. I'm a bit late to the party though - the Logitech Harmony remotes can be a bit difficult to find. Have you tried out the Sofabaton stuff? is that worth it for a home theater, or is it just a cheap knockoff to be avoided?

Nice video HCC, thank you. Thumbs up and subscribed.

I made our home theater on the cheap, but put a lot of thought into it. Fancy screen?: Nah...paint (there was a AV site that tried to mimic a $1K screen with paint, went with their recommendation). Finished the wall perfectly smooth - zero imperfections. Projector: Epson refurb. with a lot of light and dynamic range, 12 1/2' diagonal. Screen border?: 1x4 pine w/velveteen wrap. Sound system: Last years better Yamaha receiver on discount, 7.1 Monoprice + four 12" subs. Audiophile? Nope. Will it crack the wall drywall? Almost. In-wall speakers are 8" two-ways. Treble is a mixed of decent tweeters and a ribbon for the center.

Honestly, our jaws (and ears) drop at times when watching. But I could see us upgrading to a 4K sometime in the future since everything but the projector supports it. But no hurry tho. I'm sure other setup sound/look stellar, but that last 10% of 'sounding/looking better' wasn't worth it. Plus my ears/eyes in my old age, aren't the best!
