I think this is something most children of immigrants can empathize with. It can be incredibly painful to feel like you're not a "real [whatever]" because you can't speak the language well. I've definitely experienced that. And the thing is, the more shame you feel, the less you want to approach, so it's a vicious cycle. One thing I've been trying to come to terms with is that I'll probably never be proficient in my parents' language (thankfully they're both fluent in English, so it's only an issue with extended family) and to just focus on doing my best in the moment to connect with people rather than feeling bad about what I "should" be able to do.

I'm the same. I'm Filipino, my parents speak to me in visaya and tagalog and i understand them, I can watch a teleserye and understand what's going on. It's my speaking that's the problem. And I get called a fake Filipino for it. I've had cousins say it to me, and it really hit my self esteem growing up.

Yeah I feel Biboo on this one and I think a lot of immigrant kids feel this as well. Especially asians judge you really hard if you can't speak the language well if you are that ethnicity. I hate speaking Vietnamese outside the house because I know my Viet is weak and it's incredibly discouraging when people point it out and not try to help me out. Honestly it actually made me end up learning other languages because at least those people encourage you to keep trying and praise you for it.

Honestly, I love it when she speaks thai or shows her asian side on stream. It doesn’t matter whether she speaks little or much, that part of her is so precious to watch. I remember how excited she was during a collab with fuwamoco when she realized that she could understand the thai words in the game. Nice job, Biboo ☺️

I feel that. My parents only speak to me in their native language, but I only ever respond with english.

It was really nerve wracking to go back to our home country and be able to understand everything but not reply properly.
