SoundGym is an online ear training and learning centre for producers and engineers. It is a gym for your ears! We have used SoundGym before, and it is a great tool for training your ears and developing your skills. Today, we are going to take it up a level and use SoundGym’s Compressionist. This tool helps you to learn how to detect differences in attack and learn the relationship between attack and release.

In the Compressionist game on SoundGym, you get to listen to a drum loop, and then match your version to the already compressed version they have given you. As you move up in the levels, it will become more difficult, but you will be training your ears along the way so that you can more easily detect these differences!

When people ask me what attack and release are and how they can go about learning them, the first thing I tell them to do is grab a drum loop, so this is a great tool!

On SoundGym, you can also learn a wide variety of other skills, including: frequency recognition, compression and dynamics, sound location and stereo impression, distortion and sound quality recognition, detect EQ filter types, detect gain level differences, and set delay time accurately.

Once you have chosen which skills you want to improve, you are given a series of games to play that will help you hone your skills! These games and training programs are curated by sound experts, and will improve your core listening skills and having you sounding like a pro in no time at all!

Which skills would you want to improve with SoundGym?

Sound gym is amazing. As you level up it becomes more difficult to hear the differences, specially with compression and distortion. If you want to train your ear soundgym is what you need.

That's pretty damn good software, even for professionals. I've been mixing/mastering for about 20 years now but I didn't learn proper critical listening skill until the past few years. If I'd had access to this software back when I started out, I'm sure I would've learned a lot quicker. Critical listening is one of those things that takes years to master without tools like this.

Nice! Actually really hoped you'd do a video about that! Thank you! :) Keep up the good work!

Sam and I loved this website! We had one month back in January and plan to get it again soon. This really actually did improve my mixing and ability to hear the subtle nuances with stuff. We really recommend it :) Thanks for highlighting a new game on there that we hadn't played back in January.

And I did quite like the teaser at the end haha.

to me, it looks like the test-tool was on Abbey Road Studio’s website time ago. You could exercise yourself, to mix a song, trying to get the same result as the one on their mix

Hi Warren, thank you for this great video! What cable do you use to connect your guitar amp with guitar cab? Greetings from Germany!

Great still find myself looking at the meters, watching how fast it reacts, then how it releases. I've learned over time listen for attack and release....but I get lazy and rely on meters.
This plug is good exercise for the ears :-)

Quick question sir, is there a "contact us" section on your website? I wanted to send a thank you letter, I mean I'm not expecting a response but I feel it's the moral thing to do since this channel has literally transformed my life.

Hey Warren... Sorry for unrelated question but I just have to ask - what kind of PC mouse do u use? You must rack up a ton of computer hours. I hope your wrist is ok. Ive been to painville and back with too many hours with the wrong device!
