Been requesting this Battle on other channels, glad I found it here! My introduction to The Mighty Jingles, kudos there. Learned more recently on Drach’s channel than in all my 60+ years combined. The good dr. Clarke is a wealth of info & on his channel, returns comments in most cases. Thx WOW for bringing them all together to cover this topic.

The number of night actions in history make me really want a night battle mode in WoWs: (low detection, knife fights, starshell, searchlights, japanese torpedoes, more nuanced carrier involvement if at all)

What I found interesting what that in the morning of 8 December 1941 (7 December over in Pearl Harbor), the US Asiatic Fleet that included the USS Houston, Marblehead and a number of other ships that would become legends in the Java Sea were already in Iloilo City, halfway down the Philippines to the Dutch East Indies. That means the US Navy already conceded the Philippines even before Pearl Harbor was bombed.

On another note, I was thinking 'Tromp 'got lost in that same battle, but ok, my memory of some paperback novel relating quite accurately all of the battle mentionned here, was not all that accurate at the end.)) Great job. I really believe you guys had the right attitude. At the time, they had to do something to keep Japan from getting the oil, so they did what they could with the assets they had available to them. Typical Military, do everything with nothing.

Doorman was only in command because the Dutch commander of all naval forces in the East Indies, Admiral Helfrich, sabotaged US Admiral Hart's chances for the job, which Hart didn't want anyway! Both Hart and Doorman would have preferred a strategy of preserving resources and only fighting when they had a chance, but Doorman couldn't say no to Helfrich. Helfrich, who was born in the East Indies, actually believed they could be held, and blamed the allies for not giving the defense enough support. He did not, however linger to be captured, unlike the Governor-General, but got out to Ceylon.
