In this second video, Dr Tommy Lynch (Senior Lecturer in Philosophy of Religion, University of Chichester) discusses how the Free Will Defence might be used to address the evil and suffering of slavery and anti-Black racism. Considering the work of Augustine, Alvin Plantinga and Stephen T. Davis, he argues that the Free Will Defence is defenceless when it tries to address the legacy of slavery.

In future videos, Tommy will discuss issues with Hick's Irenaean Theodicy and alternative approaches to slavery, racism and the problem of evil.

Views are my own and not those of my employer.

Work discussed in this video:

Stephen T. Davis, 'Free Will and Evil' in Encountering Evil: Live Options in Theodicy, ed by Stephen T. Davis (Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press, 2001), 73-89.

Alvin Plantinga, The Nature of Necessity (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1974).

Listen. God doesn't condone slavery. When he instructs slaves to not rebel, but to be meek and loving, he's reserving punishment for slave owners in his judgement. We should not belittle an eternity in the Lake of Fire.
