He is just 15 years old. At least he is brave enough to go out and try something. Good try yaswin .

I found the formula he's truly a human calculator. f = k + [(13 × m - 1) / 5] + D + [D / 4] + [C / 4] - 2C.
k = day
M = month
D = last 2 digits of year
C = first 2 digits of year.
To account for leap years, the year starts with March is the first month being 1 to February is 12. If the month is January or February subtract 1 from the last 2 digits of year (D). Once you solve for f. Divide by 7. The remainder will determine the day of the week. 0 = Sunday to 6 = Saturday. He's amazing to do that in his head.

I think the calculations he did was not wrong. It's just the way of adding up before multiplying it or multiply before adding it up

He is using calendar calculations method to find no. of odd days in a particular date. If he gets 1 odd day it's Monday, if he gets 2 odd days, then it's Tuesday and so on.

I tell you how to calculate what day of the week it is.
A year has 365 days. The closest multiple of seven to that is 364, which means each year, the day for a certain year moves forward 1 day. For example, if March 1st 2020 is a Sunday, March 1st 2021 will be a Monday. That's the case if it doesn't involve a 29 February. In that case, he just have to count all the 29 Februarys/leap year and add an additional day for every leap year.
The closest multiple of seven to the number of days in a month is 28. If it's a month with 30 days, that's 2 days extra. If it's a month with 31 days, that's 3 days extra and so on.

Say, the day he's doing the calculation is 1st of June 2019, a Saturday. What day of the week is April 1st 2000? Let's calculate it.

So May has 31 days, April 30 days. That's 3 days + 2 days extra= 5 days.
2019 -2000 =19 years=19 days extra

19 days + 5 days = 24 days.
We crossed a total of 4 leap years, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 so that's 4 days extra.
Why didn't I count the year 2000? Because going forward from 1st April 2000, there is no 29th February in that year.
So, 24 days + 4 days = 28 days, and that just happened to be a multiple of seven. So, we didn't have to go back any day, 1st April was also a Saturday.
You can check it yourselves. I might be wrong somewhere. But, the method is correct.

@Jason: I've studied this one under the name of "Zeller's Rule", and there is a way to get it way easier: The Key Value Method on 8 steps like this:
Take the last 2 digits of the year.
Divide by 4, and drop any remainder.
Add the day of the month.
Add the month's key value: JAN=1 FEB=4 then 4, 0, 2, 5, 0, 3, 6, 1, 4 adn finally DEC=6
If your date is in January or February of a leap year, subtract 1.
Add the century code : 1700s=>4 1800s=>2 1900s=>0 2000s=>6 (they repeat every 400 years)
Add the last two digits of the year.
Divide by 7 and take the remainder.1 => Sunday, 2 => Monday, and so on.

We have competitive exams in India which ask questions related to calender .. This is quite simple to calculate actually. Every Indian who is preparing for SSC or UPSC exams should know how to calculate that. He is just showing off 😎

A student of mine with Asperger could do this with any calendar date. He could also read something in any Almanac information he read and recall it with perfection.

Yaashwin is talented, and I believe he's legit as well. I've also seen some people who are as crazy as him in math olympics too, so I wonder if he can compete at that level or not. He'd probably do really great for sure though.
