Lauren sits down with Kody Green of @SchizophrenicHippie to learn about how he uses technology like his cellphone to reality check with his hallucinations. His videos where he shows himself using this technique have gone viral on TikTok, and help to show a bit of what it can be like living with schizophrenia.

I wish my mom was around at a time like this. Growing up with her suffering with schizophrenia and living with the shame she didn't need to have only exacerbated her short life. This is a good work you are doing here for sure🙌❤

I’m glad I found this channel. I remember Kody from tik tok and he really helped me understand this a lot more. I was truly dismissive sometimes.

I saw a tiktok Kody made of himself experiencing catatonic motor twitches. His wife called the hotel he was traveling to asking them to get him to his room as soon as he got there so he didnt have to check in and deal with the in between since he was having symptoms. I SO appreciated that vulnerability. I have catatonia frequently and feel less embarrassed to be seen that way.

I cannot express how astoundingly impressive and amazing and genius this type of thing is. I’m so glad you guys do work like this on your platforms to bring visibility to stuff like that!

My primary disability is dystonia (random chronic muscle tightness) and most people have still never heard of it or know anything about it. My genius idea that I have discovered is that using vibrators all day and all night helps me greatly with my pain and muscle stiffness.

I’ve known that phones can help people with visual impairments see a functional representation of the world, but who knew that they can also help people with mental health conditions do the same thing!

I really admire disability rights advocates like you guys. Thank you for enriching our lives and building community. <3

I’ve unknowingly used this technique! It can be awkward for others but it has helped me before

My first psychotic episode, before i was diagnosed, was that i could see things or characters in video games that weren't there (and when after my treatment i realized they didn't exist) anybody else couldn't, but only i could see them, and won't give context but while paranoid i tried to record with my phone what was happening when i experienced my auditive hallucinations and once again, nobody seem to hear anything only i could distinguish what was going on. It's tough for me to say that you can rely on technology based in my experience.

OMG I just started doing this with my phone for the same reason I take pictures. This is a very helpful tool

This actually made me think about how other forms of recording could be used for auditory hallucinations - with some apps and depending how loud the location is, you could tell if there is noise just by seeing if any sound waves are being produced

I can't believe I missed this video 6 months ago. I dosen't matter how many times I click the 🔔. Great video, Thank you!

For auditory hallucinations - maybe you can use a recording app that shows if there are sound waves around. Even without recording them.

Hi Lauren I’ve really appreciated your richly thoughtful content for a while now! Earlier, my friend told me that her mom was living with bipolar with psychotic features. Like you, she’s pretty “seasoned” at managing symptoms and her kids are actually college-aged now so it’s something that she has lived with for more than thirty years. With that in mind, she’s also from a different generation and her experiences have left her much more closed off to talking about the disease for what it is. Are there any videos of yours that could normalize some things she might be experiencing even while on medication?
