First, let’s talk about driving glove history. They first appear in the 1890s and that time driving was rough. Interestingly, the driving gloves was gauntlet style that reach all the way back over you overcoat and it was made of thick leather sometimes lined with wool and you really don’t have any sensitivity in your fingers. It remained that way up about until the 1930s when the style changed dramatically. We got this really tight fitting glove, that was shorter. It had perforation holes so you wouldn’t transpire in your hands.

Today, driving gloves are associated with stylish gentlemen who take driving seriously and want to look the part. You particularly see them with people who are into vintage cars, high end cars or race cars.

Difference Between a Regular Pair of Gloves and a Pair of Driving Gloves:

Apart from lamb nappa gloves, sheep hair is another good leather for driving gloves. Deer skin can be good if it’s thin enough and then there is peccary. It’s the best leather. It’s the softest and it’s the most durable. However by default, it's rather thick.

The other difference is ventilation holes. When you race with your car, your hands are much more likely to perspire and the hole perforation helps to keep your hand climate normal so you don’t have to sweat and you have that constant grip through out your race or your drive.

Difference Between Driving Gloves and Racing Gloves:

Driving gloves are made out of leather. They give you grip. They keep you warm and they look extremely stylish. Racing gloves on the other hand are meant to really perform and protect you from eventual fires and that kind of stuff.

Different Kinds of Styles of Driving Gloves?

First of all, you can have machine sewn gloves. The fine stitching may look quite elegant, the problem is that you have seams on the inside and while you just walk its not very uncomfortable but on the steering wheel its definitely less comfortable than having them hand sewn which is the other option. You can see the seams here on the outside. And so they are much more comfortable when you drive. If you live in a warmer climate, you want to consider ones that have the finger tips cut off.

Quality Aspects To Look For in Driving Gloves:

A right grippy soft leather is important and so are seams that are on the outside. On top of that, I like to have an adjustable snap button that is not a velcro.

The next quality hallmark I pay attention to are the knuckle holes. For some strange reasons, driving gloves have these knuckle holes and probably the goal was to have better ventilation. Now I find that these four holes never actually proper align with my knuckles. So it is actually less comfortable and it can sometime chafe my skin.

In terms of driving glove colors, It is really up to you what you want to have. Some people like to match the interior of their cars. Others like it contrasting and bold. At the end of the day, it’s a personal choice.

Been wearing driving gloves for about 10 years. In addition to all of the reasons mentioned on this video, wearing gloves prevents your steering wheel from getting oily and shiny. I’m glad this style is coming back.

Whether you drive an cool sports car, a beautiful vintage car or a practical compact sedan, you can wear driving gloves. Some people are just judgemental, don't let it stop you from wearing a pair.

I can't thank you enough for this video. I've been wanting to learn about the history of driving gloves for ages. When I saw your video in my inbox I knew straight away it would be what I was looking for and i wasn't disappointed. Beautiful gloves, very tempted to get them even if my car isn't exactly difficult to keep under control haha

Although I don't own a vintage or a racing car(I own a Volkswagen Bora), I've decided to get myself a pair of driving gloves. I think that driving gloves are a wonderful accessory and have a timeless appeal.

The "leather" on many modern car wheels is very rough, and dries out, or gets worn due to age. If you have dry, or colder, hands the grip is not as good as it could be, and you will know the difference when you try on good gloves with a tight fit, and soft leather.

For a brand new car, the grip is usually very good, but if you drive a car that is a few years old, driving gloves really help with grip. Basically, they still have a use today, especially as so many modern "cheap" cars have adopted tighter, sportier steering that is less forgiving.

Bought a pair of the red Fort Belvedere driving gloves - they are an amazing fit, and grip modern plastic, vinyl, and leather steering wheels very well, not just old wooden ones as some here have described.

Two main reasons to wear driving gloves. Safety, leather on hands protect against fires and cuts in accidents. And protecting your steering wheel from your hands.

Hi Sven, I've been following this channel for a while and I've become very interested in your etiquette videos. Since I spend a great deal of time in my car I was hoping you could do a video on driving etiquette. It would be great to have a video about being a gentleman behind the wheel. Thanks Sven!

I get judged for wearing gloves in my 2011 Camaro 2SS. It’s a stick shift that i like to track a lot and it makes me feel more comfortable and in control. I love them and I don’t care what anyone says.
