We live in a oil service area, and business owners are often called blue collar millionaires. If you see a jean/tshirt guy meeting with two suits, that's the owner meeting with his accountant and lawyer.

“We buy things we don't need, with money we don't have, to impress people we don't like” - Fight Club

This is so true. My former boss, God rest his soul, owned race horses, restaurants and clubs. He was a millionaire but would wear the same 5 sweaters every week he got from Target...😂 I had mad respect for him. He didn't look flashy, just comfortable. I learned a lot from him...💕💕💕

He is so right....I have a niece who is single, makes a decent living but live above her means. Her problem is champagne taste on a beer budget. She bought a 3 car garage house (why), a car with a high monthly payment, constantly taking trips....and guess what, she has to have a roommate to help pay the mortgage...crazy.

It must be exhausting and stressful to live a life impressing people you don't even know. Expensive too.

Very true. I worked, as a bank teller, through my 20’s. A man, who could pass as “homeless” was one of the wealthiest customers, we had. Those sporting designer clothes, and cars, we’re usually in the red with enough loans to line a football field. Bank workers know better.

This is true. My grandmother would say folks who talk about having money don’t have any money.

You said it, Dave! When you really have money you do not feel the need to announce it.

Truth. My husband and I live in a small house we raised our kids in. We never felt the need to impress anyone. But we own everything we have. Not debt at all, still working. And very happy

Years ago I worked with a person who was a staff anesthesiologist for Holy Cross Hospital. He drove an old Volvo station wagon ( at least 15 years old) and wore levis and a tee shirt. We worked on building his new million dollar home. He payed it off in 5 years ! To see him you would NEVER believe he was worth that much. I asked him why he went into anesthesia, after spending 6 years becoming a physician, ( another 5 years to become an he said " because I can wear levies to work. He was one of the most Unpretentious people I know, and I have had the privilege of being acquainted with many multi millionares in my life....none of them wanted people to know that they were rich, but I've known many poor people who were poor that wanted others to think they were rich.

There is no better feeling than to be debt free. We have been debt free since 2011. Nothing is worth spending money on if you can't pay for it in cash.
Some people just don't realize the freedom it brings.

I remember being a child and there was this homeless looking guy who would bike around town on a bike that was probably his age and went to supermarkets to eat for free. He was a multimillionaire. We found out when we went selling stuff for our sports team and he just bought everything we had because it went to a good cause. Every adult knew, but us children built quite some lore around this guy.

Retired at 68. We do now take nice vacations but do not post it on social media. Nobody's business. I drive a 16 year old car that I bought used.

Man I want to buy a new truck so bad but I just can’t justify it. I’m driving a round a rust bucket right now but it’s reliable. I still have 30k student loans to pay off, really trying to finish that first. Was able to pay off 41k this year. Almost there

I love it when you sound like my mother! She was always saying “I bet they have really big bills” whenever we saw someone with a nice car or boat. 😊

Truth. I worked for a multi-millionaire. He drove modest car, modest clothes. He said I have money because I don't spend it. He said he knows he has money why does he need stuff to prove it to others. He donated a lot of money instead.

Most people who are flashy just have a lot of debt. Guys who built their wealth not through inheritance rather through hard work are usually never flashy. Because they know how hard it was and that struggle builds up a lot of humility.

My Mother said "You have no idea what debt they owe ". That was after drooling at a Porsche in my used 3 year old car. Best Advice Ever.

I couldn’t agree more!
My husband used to be a doorman at a swanky hotel. He said the one way he could tell who had money wasn’t from the fancy cars, Rolex watches, name brand clothing, etc., it was by looking at their shoes. They were clean, well polished, frugal.
