CV vs Resume: What is the Difference and Why You Need Both?

Although many people use CV and Resume as synonyms, these are actually VERY different documents.

A CV is a comprehensive document, where you list everything and anything you have ever done. You include all your work experience, educational degrees, achievements, presentations, publications, etc. Hence a CV can get quite long. CVs are also not personalized. A CV is standard document which you don't really modify when somebody asks for it.

A resume, on the other hand, is a short and personalized. In your resume you only include your the most relevant parts of your CV for the particular recipient to whom you will send your resume.
Ideally, your resume should be 1 page long.

CVs are used mostly in academia and research. While resumes are used almost anywhere else :)

But even if you are not in academia, I strongly advise you to have both a CV and a Resume...so that every time you send your resume to somebody, you first go over your long CV so you pick the most relevant information for the particular case.

Often we forget our past experiences, which can present us in a very positive light for a particular occasion. That is why keeping a casual CV can be very well worth it.

but i have a question, when i'm looking at the new CV templates, it is with 2 columns, and if i'm going to do a cv, that would means it would be like 13 pages. so i think not all suggestions are valid, like white background in the presentation, who still does that? hahaahah

thanks for the explanation. ive worked wage jobs for years and now im apply to online teaching positions. I saw Cv and was like wtf, why do i need the poke for an online job lol. After a little research, ohh now that makes sense lol. I still put my resume as i feel i have had some job gaps from my 20s, had a lot of wage jobs, and most of my teaching stuff is recent. Im sure they get a lot of that anyways. :)
