So... What happened to that Xbox 360 Dashboard Update?

With the Xbox 360 Marketplace shutting down last month, everyone was predicting a Dashboard/Kernel update would release which would take away access to the digital storefront. In a surprise to everyone, no update was deployed, and all changes to the console were done server-side! Although the online Dashboard leaves a lot to be desired for many folks out there, none of the changes made are permanent since you can retain your old Dashboard simply by disconnecting from Xbox Live.

Many people believed this was all to the update, but people who were anticipating a Dashboard/Kernel update were left puzzled as there in fact was a new update created in the form of 17698! What did it contain? Why didn't it deploy? When will it release? We don't know the answers to those questions, but we can certainly have some fun speculating!

I don't plan on selling mine because I plan on passing it down to my future kids. Chances are that the servers will be closed down by then, but they'll still enjoy the games I have for it

You know what i think is insane, you can make a lan match in a game that supports it, like Crimson skies, with every single model Xbox released playing in the same lobby, one of the coolest examples of them just keeping it so faithful and well engineered with every release and backwards compatibility that came out.

I would love a new update, one that allows you to easily find the games you've purchased and downloaded. Many of mine do not show up as things stand.

Thanks for all the tutorials you made. I was a PS2 fan-boy in the 2010's, then gave a try in the early-2020's to the PS3 (both CFW and HEN) and now in the past few weeks I'm discovering the X360 with all of it's unique stuff (RGH, Proto, etc.) and exclusive games (only bought one originally for Saints Row 1)

I think it would be cool if Microsoft should refresh the blades dashboard to where it looks a bit more High Definition and use this as the last update on the system as I hate the current dashboard, I could only wish.

Personally, I’m excited to see people work on cracking open the system more for a softmod-based solution. Hopefully that’s in the 360’s immediate future.

On stealths with points/currency spoofing you can actually still make "purchases" and they do work (somewhat, it's kinda complicated) but your account will be locked out for breaking ToS. It doesn't even show as a ban on the console, you get stuck in a sign in loop, but if you sign in on a browser you get told your account is locked.

Personally I hope the store stays as long as possible even in it's current limited form. At lest we can go back and read descriptions of what was once available for download. If only there way a way to preserve the store just to go back and see what was once available. Of course some of this has been archived offline but browsing the actual store has an authentic feel that completes the the whole Xbox 360 experience.

Xbox 360 and the SNES are the systems is gave so much money on, even bought a flatscreen for it when people where still on CRTV's. Loved this system so much, have a fysical collection with more then 300 games (recently got 70 games donated from a friend). Good memories on this one, besides... you know the RROD.

It would be pretty sweet if the final update patch unlocked the console to allow homebrew functionality without modding.

It be nice if they allowed themes to change the dashboard type and intro type as a memorial to the history of the 360.
