This is just the “hero’s journey” story device. The most common trope in the history of telling character-centric stories. Toss in Sacrifice somewhere in there (which all the games do I believe), and you’ve got a complete character story arc

Even with the staple missions like tracking down Benny or Hover Dam - there is multiple ways to complete each.
You can play New Vegas 10 times and deal with Benny differently each time. Hover Dam can be completed a whole plethora of different ways as well.
