Overview:German-born Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale) has dreamed of flying airplanes since he was a child. When he grew up, he immigrated to the United States with his family and joined the army to become a real pilot. Dieter then goes to Vietnam with the Navy. While en route to a mission, Dieter's plane was shot down by ground fire from the Vietnamese army. Dieter escaped death but was captured and tortured by the enemy. Dieter was taken to a POW camp in Laos, where he was joined by several fellow U.S. Army personnel. Watching over the inhumane treatment meted out to them by the enemy, Dieter is determined to escape before he even sits down, but his companions around him, Gene (Jeremy Davies) and Duane (Steve Zinn), don't think so and don't have much faith. With some persuasion, Dieter makes an elaborate plan to break out of prison when the rainy season comes. What they have to face is endless jungle, hunger, wild animals, and the Vietnamese who don't know where they are.
