Why Cars Are Made to Go Faster Than Legal Limits? Why do cars have 200MPH Top Speeds if they can't even go past 80MPH Speed Limits? The answer is because, I bought the whole speedometer, so I'm going to use the whole speedometer...err I mean.

Just because a car can go 200MPH, doesn't mean it needs to 24/7. Most Cars with high top speeds are geared in a way so their transmission and engine aren't redlining 24/7 and stressing their internals and causing premature wear. Sugon Deez Nutz Infographics Show, wasted 53 seconds to say the same shiiiiiiiii I say in the first 10 seconds. I don't talk down to my viewers, American or otherwise, I trust y'all to grasp concepts within 10 seconds if I simplify it enough. I'm a good teacher and y'all are great learners!

Limiters are part of a cars ecm (engine control module)/ecu. The ecm/ecu controls the air fuel ratio, ignition timing, among other essential functions of your motor with data from multiple sensors throughout the car in multiple systems such as the o2 wide band in your exhaust system to detect if your running too lean or too rich. It does it all automatically assuming there are no underlying issues throwing a dtc code. Tuning takes the ecm and rewrites the programming. With the tune you can have the car make better power for your application and desired fuel. The limiter is almost always deleted just as a byproduct of the tuning. Cars are a lot more durable the most people think. With a stock car off the lot your sacrificing power for longevity and with tuning your sacrificing longevity for power. Im pretty qualified in this as an ASE mechanic and I've done some work with some tuning shops around my neck of the woods.

I would actually go insane if we had a 70 mph speed limit.

it's the same as the good old saying

More speed = more gears = lower RPM at cruising = better fuel economy

Imagine how unfun life would be with cars that only go the speed limit

gonna show this to my mom who says “why are cars faster than speed limits” 😂

If you've ever been on a bicycle, you know that it's best to stay on a gear that gives a good amount of resistance as you pedal. If you are on too low a gear, you'll be pedaling at a very high rate for very little speed and you'll end up running out of breath. If you are at the highest gear, you'll be having to put all your weight behind each pedal and you might overexert your muscles. I would say it's the same with engines. They have all these different gear ratios so you can keep the RPM at a good spot. A side effect of this design is that you can simply put your car on the highest gear and also push the pedal all the way to go faster than is safe.

Yes, you wanna be at 2000rpm on the highway not 7000 😹

He was right, the simple answer is gearing. Your car CAN go 80 mph with two gears, but you’ll get the fuel economy of a Bugatti veyron. Not to mention, your engine was not meant to spin at 7000 rpm for 30 minutes straight, which means that your engine will probably break after a few hours, maybe even minutes

basically, the difference is having and engine that is designed to take more load and then underwork it, thus not putting as much wear on it
for underpowered cars, they need to work a lot harder to get up to speeds and then go faster for overtakes, which puts more strain on the drivetrain causing it to wear out more quickly as it wasn't designed to take that kind of load

a simple analogy is, would you ask a strong person for moving things around or would you ask a kid? the answer is of course, use the kid bc free child labour

“Why are cars so much faster than speed limits?”

Well if you're german you'll find out why

As a German I can't even imagine what a constant speed limit would feel like, imagine driving 130 kmh and taking forever even though the car can easily go 200+kmh

Yeah don’t forget I’m going down the highway at 70mph passing someone at 97mph

Little thing: GM puts their top end limiters based on the tires that come on the cars from the factory. My Camaro with the 2LS package comes stock with H-rated tires so it [was] limited to 118 (you can imagine how long that stuck around when I found out.) However any other V6 model with the Z-rated tires on the RS package (2LT n whatnot) would get a top end limiter at 155.
