HAWAII: THE LOST PARADISE

In this video I visit Oahu and Kauai, Hawaii, which became the 50th State of the U.S. in 1959. It has a huge tourism industry concentrated in Oahu’s Waikiki beach. Hawaii's history is complex, it was a sovereign nation for 100 years before being illegally annexed by the USA and it has a large immigrant population made up of Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and others who came to Hawaii to work the sugar plantations in the 18th century. Hawaiian culture is therefore a mix of native Hawaiian, Asian and American cultural influences and this is seen in the people and the food of the islands. Tourism and big business have disenfranchised the native Hawaiian people of their right to land, resources and property, in this video I speak to the locals about their opinions on Hawaii and being part of the USA, it's an eye opening insight into the history of these beautiful islands. I also visit Kauai island which has managed to resist the over development of tourism infrastructure seen in Oahu. This is where Hawaii's unspoilt natural beauty can be found along the Napali Coast with its incredible mountains, and you can experience a sense of the Old Hawaii.

Hawaii is an interesting place with a long and complex history that has resulted in a real mix of cultural influences and people today. I ask the locals what they think of their islands. Has anyone been to Hawaii and what was their experience?

I’m from here and proud to be a local, but if it wasn’t the USA, some other country would have taken this land as their own period. It’s strategically too important not to acquire militarily. If I had to choose a country to belong to, I’m glad that it was the USA. Do we have gripes and problems? Who doesn’t? Think positive, hold on to the culture, roll with the punches and make the most of it. God bless!

Wow, Millennial Angelica! This video was amazing! You perfectly captured the beauty of Hawaii and its complex history. You're not only gorgeous but also a fantastic presenter! Love how you explore the island's culture and the challenges it faces.

Born and raised here with big family and our community is proud to have an American 🇺🇸 government and military as our island would have been prey to China or Japan taking it over. Absolutely without a doubt. Our family went into the military and we bought and paid for our home here because of the opportunity. People need to stop with all the ignorance and hate towards the mainlanders and feel safe and protected and lucky it’s the USA. Communist china being in charge would be the alternative and these young people need to understand this. It’s always been nothing but war and conflict throughout history. This island chain was made for all people not just people who say they conquered it first. Stop with all the hate. Teach your kids to be better.

Hawaii is still paradise...look to the forests and the plants and the beautiful volcanic scenery. It's one of the places you can get greeted with a lei, hug or kiss and a welcoming " Aloha". There is still coconuts and ohia lehua ( native) trees. You can still eat Hawaiian food- poi, sweet potato, and fish( ahi, or tako-octopus). You can also eat limpets or opihi a Hawaiian delicacy. You can see hula shows and hear the Hawaiian language.

I’ve observed that while Hawaiians are kind and welcoming, there seems to be a protective caution when it comes to their culture and identity. They value their language, traditions, and heritage deeply, and interactions often feel carefully measured to avoid offense.

I hope that one day Hawaii might choose to pursue greater independence, allowing its unique culture to thrive without external influences. The beauty and richness of Hawaiian 🌺 traditions deserve to be preserved and celebrated fully, as they are truly extraordinary.

I am kanaka ʻōiwi and I want to thank you for this contribution of educating those who don’t know the history of Hawaiʻi. It’s not up to Natives to teach foreigners, we already have the big job of teaching our own people. So thank you for teaching other outsiders.

Greetings Miss Angelica,
Once again, congratulations to you and your team on an outstanding documentary. I found your closing statements at 27:52 particularly compelling, as they perfectly capture my sentiments regarding the current state of the islands.

Wife and myself visited Hawaii back in 2004. We spent five days in Maui and five days in Waikiki. We loved every minute of it. It was very expensive over there back then. Not sure if it’s still like that today…

Hawaii was originally annexed as a territory during the Spanish American War. In 1959, Hawaiians overwhelming voted to become a US state.

I think there are layers in Hawaii. First days you see the very American mood at surface especially in Honolulu but if you spend more days moving around to small islands the Hawaian culture will come out more and more.
