What Do You Have To Do To Become A Travel Agent?

This is absolutely one of the very top questions I get on a regular basis: “What do you have to do to become a travel agent?” 🤔

Since I started my own journey as a travel agent way back in the 90s, the industry has grown and changed and had its 🎢 ups and downs. The processes, the available resources, the required skills, the competition… The environment for becoming a travel agent today looks very different than it did when I first started.

But the one fundamental thing that stays the same in the travel industry no matter what is that a travel agent’s job is to serve clients and ensure that they have the very best travel experience possible. As a beginner travel agent, you have to start somewhere, so it might as well be there. To become a travel agent, you have to make sure you have a ❤️ heart and a 🧠 mind for serving the client and making them happy.

Okay, so that’s what you need to do philosophically to become a travel agent. But what else? Do you have to go to school? Get an apprenticeship? Take a travel equivalent of the Hippocratic Oath? (“First, do no harm… to the client’s vacation by booking them into a timeshare presentation without telling them.”) 😄

This video was really helpful! I'm brand new to the travel world, and I signed up with a host agency. While they promise to walk newbies through everything to become a travel agent, it still feels like a bunch of puzzle pieces instead of a fluid, step-by-step what to do, like you're talking about.

My “why” is to have a little bit more freedom in my life overall. I have been working as a hotel sales and events manager for the past 8 years and have been in the hospitality industry since I was a teenager. Back in October I was laid off due to COVID, and had to take a step back to figure out what I truly wanted from my life. I needed a little bit more freedom as to where I work from, and came to realize that I need to work either at home, with the opportunity to be mobile as well. I also wanted to shift from working for a hotel specifically, to being able to plan travel for other people around the world, with the background knowledge that I have, and my passion for travel and for sales/planning.

I am starting travel school next month online at a local college here in Canada so I am definitely looking forward to this next step. 🥰

I am from a very small town, I grew up in a little county in WV never thinking or dreaming of going other places. When I hit high school my dads job took us to three different states and really opened my eyes. I moved out of my home town at 16 years old. I still live in WV (different area ) but I am very very blessed to work for an amazing company that gives me three weeks vacation a year while I’m only working 30hours a week. I just got home from my second ever (and this year!!) solo vacation!! It is the most freeing, independent, eye opening thing anyone can do! I’d love to help solo traveler, because it can be super super scary but AMAZING. I love it. While on vacation this week I was in the fabulous Las Vegas, all my Facebook friends from the east coast were messaging me every day asking me “what do you do for a living?”, “wow you are having so much fun!”, “I’d love to go to Vegas!!”, “next time you go to Vegas, bring me with you!” It felt good. I just wanted to give everyone pointers and the confidence of “if I can do it, you can do it!”
