While uploading my last short, I noticed the YouTube's new "Altered Content" disclosure. It looks like the platform is trying to deal with the onslaught of #AI-generated shorts and other videos that have been flooding the platform over the past few months. It's also PROBABLY trying to get ahead of misinformation expected around the upcoming U.S. #election #election2024

I'd imagine that means YouTube is planning on a few things:

- Warning viewers, maybe with a pop-up or some other symbol (like the "Includes Paid Promotion" overlay) that the content is AI-generated
- Having the algorithm reduce the reach of such videos and shorts
- Demonetizing or outright removing videos that share misinformation
- Saving its own tush from potential litigation over misinformation, and putting it on bad-actor creators spreading misinformation

One side benefit for REAL creators here could be that the platform starts rewarding people who are putting effort into making videos, rather than bot farms churning out AI-generated content.

If you haven't seen it yet, here's what the disclosure looks like (with Yes and No options in the middle).

"Do any of the following describe your content?
- Makes a real person appear to say or do something that they didn't say or do
- Alters footage of a real event or place
- Generates a realistic-looking scene that didn't actually occur

To follow YouTube's policy, you're required to tell us if your content is altered or synthetic and seems real. This includes realistic sounds or visuals made with AI or other tools. Selecting 'Yes' adds a label to your content."
