Aimee Mann - 4th Of July

Great "holiday" song off her first solo album, "Whatever", 1993. Live footage from the St Ann's DVD (altered color).

Lyrics:

Today's the Fourth of July
Another June has gone by
And when they light up our town I just think
What a waste of gunpowder and sky
I'm certain that I am alone
In harboring thoughts of our home
It's one of my faults that I can't quell my past
I ought to have gotten it gone

Oh, baby, I wonder
If when you are older
Someday
You'll wake up
And say, 'my god, I should have told her -
What would it take?
But now here I am and the world's gotten colder
And she's got the river down which I sold her.'

So that's today's memory lane
With all the pathos and pain
Another chapter in a book where the chapters are endless
And they're always the same
A verse, then a verse, and refrain

Oh, baby, I wonder
If when you are older
Someday
You'll wake up
And say, 'my god, I should have told her' -
What would it take?
But now here I am and the world's gotten colder
And she's got the river down which I sold her
She's got the river down which I sold her

A Mann's lyric writing is ... so under-rated

Aimee is the only songwriter I respect as much as Joni Mitchell. We are blessed by the Muses to have had these great women in our lives.

Why am I hugging myself? There must be a warm heart to cuddle out there somewhere.

Listening to 4th of July on the 4th of July as fireworks blast off in the distance. Thanks for writing this perfect song, Aimee.

I posted this on my Facebook page on July 4th. As the sky lights up, I always think "what a waste of gunpowder and sky".

This song tears me up like a thousand fireworks going off inside me at the same time. I listen to it every year on the 4th of July... such an intense time in my life. Never to be forgotten.

One of my favorites from Aimee. Long time fan since 'Til Tuesday.

Aimee speaks my heart without saying very much, like a great painting. She may be more profound from a distance and at low volume…

Last year on Independence Day, my best friend sent me this and told me it was his official 4th of July song (he had a specific song for every holiday).

Tragically, he passed away a week and a half after that day.

Starting today, I will play this every 4th of July in his honor.

The good lord blessed us all with Aimee. My top 3 woman songwriters (not necessarily in order of greatness) Carol King, Aimee Man, Joni Mitchell) Obviously many others also.
