There is a consensus that Belgian professional cyclist Eddy Merckx was the best ever. He had an impressive amateur and professional career, winning the Tour de France five times, the Giro d'Italia five times, and the Vuelta a Espana once. He also won every other major classic at least twice (finishing with 19 classic victories in total). He won the title of world champion three times, set a new hour record, and dominated the sport like no one before.

Eddy Merckx was born as Edouard Louis Joseph, Baron Merckx on 17 June 1945 in Meensel-Kiezegem, Belgium. "Merckx's upbringing was relatively affluent compared to that of other cycling greats of the time. Eddy Merckx had more options than his contemporaries, who like him turned to cycling to supplement their meager incomes.

His loved ones probably would have been happier if he had taken a more conventional middle-class job. On the other hand, Merckx saw no value in this. His interest was piqued by bicycle racing, and after he impressed his mother by dominating in a number of amateur competitions, she encouraged him to pursue a career as a professional cyclist.

Anybody who claims that someone else was the GOAT, knows nothing about cycling. Someone here said Binda was the best. Let's do a quick comparison:
Both 3 X world champion
Both 5 X Giro
Tour de France: Merckx 5 Binda 0
Vuelta a Espagna Merckx 1 (only time he participated) Binda Zero.

Merckx: 19 classic Monuments Binda 7:
Milano San Remo Merckx 7 Binda 2
Tour of Flanders Merckx 2 Binda 0
Paris Roubaix Merckx 3 Binda 0
Liège Bastogne Liège Merckx 5 Binda 0
Giro della Lombardia: Merckx 2 Binda 5

Stage wins in Grand Tours:
TdF: Merckx 34 Binda 2
GdI: Merckx 24 Binda 41
Vuelta: Merckx 6 (Binda never participated)

what's more, Merckx often didn't just win by a narrow margin, he would win by minutes ahead of the rest. He dominated the sport like no other rider in history, winning almost 1 race in 3 in his career (take into account that he didn't win a lot anymore in his last years as a professional. 1969: 43 victories, 1970:52, 1971: 54; 1972: 50, 1973: 51, 1974: 38, 1975: 38

Whoever saw Merckx, Coppi and Binda racing said that the best was Binda.

I saw Eddie Merckx in Montreal in the1974 world championship along with 100, 000 other lucky people. I believe it was one of the best road races of the generation and one of Merckx's greatest achievement. It is something as a fan of the sport I was truly lucky to see. We had managed to be (illegally )at the finish line grandstand when he won. The penultimate lap he was over a 1/2 minute down. They say that when he rode up Mt. Royal for the last lap only Raymond Poulidor could barely stay on his wheel. I was truly fortunate to witness one of the greatest cycling performances so far.
