My mom's mom's house has a household spirit they named Herman. He lives in the attic. He's a little more mischievous. He tends to hide things like scissors and silverware only to turn up in odd places later.
So when you lose something and you can't find it, you'd go up stairs and knock on the attic door and ask for it back. If you're lucky, he'd give it back in the next day or so.

No wonder my cat really loves our new house here in Colorado, he is a Norwegian forest cat and Colorado is heavily populated with Nordic and Germanic people so he and the house spirit must be chums!

I’m from Norse and Finnish ancestry…. I live in Minnesota, my Grandfather on my mother’s side is Finnish we grew up celebrating Yule I still celebrate it today ; every year people will tell me Marry Christmas and I’ll say happy Yule .

Even though living in Denmark I definitely have the opposite of a helping nisse. Things tend to get lost and dirtier :P
There's a neat story about a nisse that was tricked by the maid on a farm:
She placed a lump of butter at the bottom of the porridge that was offered to the nisse around Jule.
Being used to have butter on the porridge at Jule, the nisse got so angry there was none, he killed the best cow on the farm.
When he later found out the butter has been there all the time, he then stole an even better cow to replace the dead one. :)
