How to Remove a Metal Wedge from an Axe Head Quicker

This video didn’t turn out quite the way I wanted it to, but it shows all the steps. So, basically when you have a metal wedge in an axe head it is very soft material. As long as you drill a good pilot hole you can thread a screw into it and And slap it out with a slide hammer. It doesn’t turn out this easy in the video but I promise
It is. Okay Also I did successfully remove the handle without damaging it. I hope you enjoy the video!!

I have used the same principle but with an 'easyout' stud extractor on the slide hammer, a great method and nearly always works. Works on barrel wedges too if you drill out the center first. When barrel is out, glue in a piece of dowel and re-cut the slot. I never use steel wedges now** but do use at least one pair [often two pr.] of wooden cross wedges. This really tightens the wood in both directions and gives a very solid fit. I also gave up gluing wedges years ago. Provided you design and trim your wedge well, they never pop out. Biggest mistake many folks make, is they use too fat of a wedge, and it will not drive right down to the bottom of the slot. It is the bottom of the wedge in the parallel sided middle of the eye, that grips to prevent wedge popping up.
** only time I use steel, is when a head comes loose in the woods ... even then, I don't drive it all the way, so I have something to grip on later when I re-wedge it back in the shop

Thanks for the tip. You mentioned you wanted to hear some ideas of things we would like to see I’ve got a couple, I’d like to see your process of making ax handles. I’d also like to see how you sharpen an ax.
Thanks again, Randy

Lol...that cast wedge was a neat twist in the video. I was baffled when everything just shattered. The video quality and audio are great...i think you are off to an excellent start. Cheers

Great tip! New subscriber here thanks to SC. I love watching axe and hammer content. The filming was pretty good actually. I like that you showed the process. There was no way of knowing it was cast iron. People will stick anything in there .

Good tip, never seen a cast iron wedge. I would try it again to get more of it out, if there is enough to drill another hole.

Not the first person to use what they had laying around but a chunk of cast does seem like it must be a rare choice.

I’m going to make an Osage axe handle soon! Wonderful wood species.
Cast iron wedge!? Wow haha
That would work well for modern aluminum wedges or even a steel wedge. Cool video!

I saw Scoutcrafters video on the slide hammer trick. I must make one or I will try the other method you talked about. I have a couple Axe heads I need to do as projects and I will probably need to use this idea. Thanks for sharing. Good stuff. How did you get the rest of the cast iron out?
