•This tradition spans centuries, with some divers in their 80s still active.
•Haenyeo communities are matriarchal, and the tradition improved women’s status in Jeju.
•Divers use unique “sumbisori” breathing techniques upon surfacing.
•They pray to Jamsugut, a sea goddess, for safety and prosperity.
•They practice emphasizes environmental sustainability, only harvesting in sustainable quantities.
•It’s common for Haenyeo to still dive when they are pregnant & breastfeeding. It’s common for them to dive until the day they give birth, and to return to the ocean soon after the baby is born, taking breaks to breast feed.

•You can watch the Haenyeo Women Diver Show at Seongsan Ilchulbong
•At certain times of the year, the show runs at 1:30 PM and 3 PM daily. At other times of the year, it runs at 2pm once a day. It’s unclear when the schedule changes, so on the safe side, show up for 1:30.
•The show is free
•The show does not run if the weather is poor / too windy
