DONNA SUMMER She Works Hard For The Money 40th ANNIVERSARY

One of the most memorable and anthemic hits of 1983: 'She Works Hard For The Money' by the one and only Donna Summer. It is 40 years to the day since the album of the same name was released and the single was a huge hit all over the globe. Issued in the May of that year; it pre-empted the long player by a matter of weeks and helped it to be her best selling album of that decade and the song was a Top 3 in America. Here in Oz, 'She Works Hard For The Money' the 7 inch did nearly as well; peaking at #4 nationally.

Donna was nominated for the Grammy for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for the song and the clip used here is from her opening of the 1984 telecast. But as it is the album version I have used the audio from, some re-editing was required. I have come to love this song much more in the ensuing decades than I did back in the day. It had a negative association for me in the winter of 1983, but that is way to personal and complicated a tale to tell on youtube! But I have been a Donna Summer fan through thick and thin, better or worse since 1976!

Donna Summer sashayed her way off the mortal coil in 2012 and if anything the decade or so since has only strengthened and vindicated her place in pop culture history. Not just the Queen Of Disco, Donna reinvented herself in the 1980's and beyond as a force of nature with pop/rock/dance/funk and R&B. Her voice is stellar; her presence immense and her legacy - huge!
