'Huge mistake to see it as regular storm!' Storm Debby promises damage to Florida coast

Tropical Storm Debby is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall in Florida's Big Bend region by midday Monday, August 5. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns of life-threatening storm surges up to 10 feet.
As Storm Debby approaches, US Coast Guard on Sunday rescued two stranded boaters off Florida coast near Boca Grande in heavy rain and huge waves.
Footage from St. Petersburg, Florida shows strong winds and waves crashing over seawalls. As of 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, Debby had sustained winds of 70 mph, just below hurricane strength, and is expected to strengthen overnight.
The storm has rapidly intensified, with maximum sustained winds increasing from 50 mph to 65 mph within hours on Sunday. It is the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
Debby is expected to bring heavy rains and coastal flooding to Florida's Gulf Coast, with potential for historic rainfall and catastrophic flooding in Georgia and South Carolina. Rainfall could reach 10-20 inches, with some areas seeing up to 30 inches.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has mobilized 3,000 National Guard troops and issued emergency orders for most cities and counties. Mandatory evacuations are in place for several Gulf Coast counties.
Governors of Georgia and South Carolina have also declared states of emergency.
Debby's impact could last through Friday, with severe flooding expected in low-lying areas near the coast, including Savannah, Hilton Head, and Charleston.
